Welcome to Wikicars!

Hi there, 0-172, and welcome to Wikicars! I'm a regular moderator and contributor here, and when I notice on the recent changes log that a new editor has registered, I like to send them a welcome message - that's how I ended up on your talk page.

There are a few useful links that you might want to look at, designed to help newcomers to Wikicars learn the ropes:

Here are a few templates on Wikicars that I find particularly helpful when I start a new page:

Here are a few features of Wikicars that I find particularly helpful:

  • If you leave a message on a talk page, you can sign it with four tildes (~), which will automatically produce your name and a date stamp when you save the page.
  • The "Show preview" button allows you to look at what your post will look like before you save it - that way, you can proofread what you've written and not have to back and correct spelling mistakes, failed links, etc.
  • You can create a watchlist for yourself that will keep a record of any changes made to a page that interests you.

There are plenty of other features and facets of Wikicars, many of which I probably haven't even discovered myself, so have fun looking around and finding them.

If you need help, ask me on my talk page.

Again, welcome and thanks for adding to our community!--MQuan 17:08, 20 November 2006 (UTC)

List of Maunfacturers on Main Page

Hello 0-172! First of all, welcome to Wikicars! =) Secondly, those manufacturers are not being excluded. They can be accessed off the main page by clicking on Search by Make. Thanks! -Nidhi 16:34, 20 November 2006 (UTC)

Your Wikicars Concerns Answered

Hello Michael,

Thank you for all you concerns with the Wikicars site. I appreciate your enthusiasm to jump in and fix things and your keen eye for detail, and those are the exact same qualities we look for in our administrators here. Since you are interested in an administrative role on the site, I'll pass your name on to the rest of the moderators.

Being a new wiki, we used some of the content from Wikipedia to get us started, but we'd rather not take all their content verbatim. Rather, we'd like to develop on it and delve three or four levels deeper. In doing so, we did not create info boxes at the time of launch, because it would have been a bit more involved to decide which models get info boxes and which don't. As you are well aware, the automotive industry is such a melting pot of brands and vehicles, that it would have been difficult to classify certain vehicles as just one category. Be that as it may, it is a wiki-based community site, and we are open to all kinds of suggestions and edits.

I, myself, am not all that familiar with the makes that you mentioned were missing form the site. We can build a portal for foreign makes and exotic cars, which I'm guessing a vast majority of these cars are. If you have any other concerns about the site, let me know.

Thanks, Michael! -Nidhi 21:39, 28 November 2006 (UTC)

Vandalism/Inappropriate content

I know. =( This continues to be a growing concern on our end, too. We're in the process of implementing a automated wiki-filter that will revert those changes and ban the IP address or member for such offensive behavior.

As for the Talk:Main Page/, that is "creative spamming." Some dedicated spammer is going out of their way to implecate new spam on the site. Thanks for the heads up! =)

Aweosme Infoboxes!

Thanks for taking initiative and making those infoboxes. They look great! =)

LA Auto Show

I went ot the LA Auto Show on Wednesday. Saw the Audi R8! Will be going back this weekend and again on Tuesday! =D -Nidhi 23:13, 1 December 2006 (UTC)

Lucky! did you happen to see the Altima Coupe? How about the Ford Mustang Giugiaro Concept? 0-172 7:19, 2 December 2006 (UTC)

Yepp! Wasn't very impressed with the Altima Coupe. Looks a lot like a G6 Coupe from the back and the Maxima from the front. I wonder if they'll make a hardtop convertible, as well. I did like the Mustang Giugiaro concept, though. Very sleek and chic! Nidhi 22:47, 4 December 2006 (UTC)

Hmmm...Interesting. What about the Mazda Nagare Concept and the Volkswagen Tiguan? 0-172 4:40, 5 December 2006 (UTC)

Liked the Tiguan! It's like a "Mini-Me" version of the Touareg. It's hard to pass judgement on Mazda's Nagare Concept. It's definitely sleek, I have no idea what the interior will be like, so I guess we play the waiting game and we'll see what happens. -Nidhi 21:51, 4 December 2006 (UTC)

Maserati Question

I need your opinion on this 0-172, i'm thinking about dividing the maserati coupe and spyder into two separate articles. it just seems like it could be made cleaner that way. what are you thoughts? oh and by the way, im not the only newcomer here. I've managed to coax all the boys at modern and classic automobile discussion forum (not really all that difficult when you're dealing with auto enthusiasts) to help out and contribute to the car/article of their choosing. Anyway, thanks for the welcome. If you would like to check our little community, it's www.atfreeforum.com/mcad. Red_marquis 23:42, 7 December 2006 (UTC)

Yes, seperating the coupe from the spider would clean things up, but one problem is that they are essentially the same car. You could possibly seperate the article into two sections. One section for the coupe, the other for the convertible. With two sections though, you would have to have an infobox for the coupe and one for the convertible. I did notice a few other new contributors, but your massive amount of contributions caught my attention. 0-172 4:39, 8 December 2006 (UTC)

I have another question: where is the redirect button in the edit page? it would make searches far more convenient, i think. Red_marquis 14:56, 9 December 2006 (UTC)

How do I tag them? i always start with the "Template:" prefix. My apologies. Red_marquis 14:53, 10 December 2006 (UTC)

More Praise

0-172, Just chiming in with more praise for your fine work here. Your expertise is adding a lot! Thanks. LuvWikis 14:24, 9 December 2006 (UTC)

About the Storm

I hope everything is okay with you! LuvWikis 20:58, 16 December 2006 (UTC)

I'm fine, the storm just came through and brought many trees down. With no power, my house got pretty cold. I just got my power back late sunday afternoon. 0-172 6:03, 19 December 2006 (UTC)

Glad to hear it is getting back to normal! Thanks for welcoming Red Marquis! LuvWikis 03:02, 19 December 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for my new ride!

Contributor Box

PNiddy, I really like it, except... I think the edit about "he's taken initiative in..." is way too "omniscient-ish"....how about saying something like an epxert in exotic and supercarscars"....0-172, agree? Also, I don't think we want the administrator link on the home page.

Agreed! I had put up the box before I had a chance to check my email and I just wanted to make sure I got the articles you mentioned in there. I see you've made the necessary changes, already. Thx! :o) -Nidhi 14:51, 27 December 2006 (UTC)

Photos

Hi 0-172. This is probably an unnecessary post.....I see you are uploading great photos-- I love them! I'm just checking to make sure that they aren't copyrighted images. Do you mind sharing where are you getting most of them? Since you're a wiki veteran, I'm sure you've considered this, so mostly curious about your sources. Thanks! LuvWikis 00:47, 28 December 2006 (UTC)

I'm pretty sure that they're not copyrighted. I don't even consider the images with a site name or emblem in any of the corners, those are surely copyrighted. How would one tell if an image was copyrighted?(Just asking) 0-172 4:31, 29 December 2006 (UTC)

One of my resources is: Concept Carz

OK, Thanks. The example above is a good one, since the photos are marked as from the manufacturer, who generally make photos available for pr purposes. LuvWikis 01:23, 1 January 2007 (UTC)

Question on Discussion Pages

I'd like to know if there is a short way to be able to send out messages to every one without necessarily having to visit every contributors user page? I think it could help better organize wikicars. There is a specific topic i'd like to discuss with everyone. it might seem a trifle insignificant but i noticed that there are several forms of infobox automobiles on this site. i was thinking what if we standardized it to streamline the pages and add professionalism. This infobox is what i've seen used most commonly:

Currently Used
Manufacturer
Production
Class
Body style
Lengh
Weight
Transmission
Engine
Similar

Unfortunately this infobox is chockful of errors like spelling mistakes (see "Length") and missing several parts (width, height, wheelbase, etc.)

I have since created and have been using a more expanded and IMO complete infobox. Check out my Maserati A6 page to copy and paste. I have deliberately left it unfilled to act as a control. If anyone has any suggestions as to things they want to add or modify please notify me so we can maintain a uniform look to wikicars. Or if you don't feel like digging around here are the codes:

As far as I know, there is no way to send a message to everyone a once. The only solution I can think of is posting your message on the main page's discussion page. As for the infobox, I too have noticed multiple infoboxes used. I was also thinking of standardizing an infobox foruniversal use. 0-172 6:03, 7 January 2007 (UTC)
I'm doubting the designer and A.KA. sections. Sometimes those sections aren't appliable. 0-172 6:05, 7 January 2007 (UTC)

Im thinking maybe they could just be left unfilled. this is a wikisite anyway so maybe at some point in the future some contributor might be able to fill out that blank. as far as design teams go, the honor will simply go to the chief designer on that team... Red_marquis 10:19 am, 3 January 2007 (UTC)

I agree that the larger infobox is more comprehensive, and I think it would be a great idea to use them as a template. I also agree that we can leave any unknown information unfilled, because, as Red marquis mentioned, this is a Wiki after all. When we first began populating the pages in Wikicars, we were initially pulling straight from Wikipedia, which accounts for the inconsistency of the infoboxes we had before. But yes, it would be nice and more professional to make them more consistent across the board. Also, thanks for the comment, 0-172; my page isn't as automotive-centered as yours, but I'm hardly an expert on the subject. - Pastrami on Ry 17:11, 3 January 2007 (UTC)

A new infobox. streamlined and, now, stylised. what more could you want?

{{{Image}}}
{{{Name of Vehicle}}}
{{{Manufacturer}}}
aka
Production
Class
Body Style
Length
Width
Height
Wheelbase
Weight
Transmission
Engine
Power
Similar
Designer

Red_marquis 3:41 pm, 5 January 2007 (UTC)

I like it. The infobox box you created looks alot cleaner and better than previously used boxes. 0-172 3:59 pm, 5 January 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for the comment....

I don't know as much about cars as you or some of the others do, so I just focused on making my user page a bit more personalized, something that reflects my personality... sort of... Anyway, thanks! - Pastrami on Ry 15:37, 5 January 2007 (UTC)

new feature

im thinking maybe we should add a feature on the rides of heads of state from all countries on the "living on the automotive edge (?)" section on the main page. im preparing a list of all countries right now as i type. Red_marquis 12:12pm, 07 January 2007 (UTC)

Interesting idea. 0-172 7:37am, 7 January 2007 (UTC)

Sysop

Could you make me a sysop here?? I'd be very willing to help out, I edit a few car-related articles over on Wikipedia. --SunStar Net 19:12, 9 January 2007 (UTC)

First of all, I don't have that power. For adminship see Nidhi. And second of all, for my standards, you have to prove yourself before becoming a sysop. 0-172 3:06, 10 January 2007 (UTC)

template tagging

i've retagged every errant template i could find. Red_marquis 9:01, 15 January 2007 (UTC)

Artega GT Coupe

Yeah I know. I'm not seeing it either. The file says it's gif. Does it work here? -Red marquis 22:20, 27 February 2007 (UTC)

How do I create an image link? -Red marquis 22:26, 27 February 2007 (UTC)

Nope. Doesn't work. -Red marquis 22:34, 27 February 2007 (UTC)

Bentley Havana

Im having a problem with the image. at 300px, the image, at least in my comp looks "stretched". it only appears normal when there's a 50px addition or subtraction -Red marquis 22:34, 27 February 2007 (UTC)

I've switched it to 350px how does it look? do you get the same problem at 300px? -Red marquis 22:37, 27 February 2007 (UTC)

User Page

yep. Red marquis 21:19, 4 March 2007 (UTC)

Si Sedan

Hey that SI Sedan picture you uploaded is not an Si if it was an Si it would say i-Vtech on the side.

Sorry, I'm not an expert on that type of thing. I believe that that is the Civic SI Sedan concept. Enzo Worshipper (Talk to me + Contribs) 12:37, 9 March 2007 (UTC)

Admin

"First, what do plan to do with your admin powers? Second, why do you think you deserve to become an administrator?" - Enzo Worshipper

1. I plan to help make the most accurate and helpful articles, and make sure there is no inaccurate/useless information on Wikicars.
2. Because I really love cars and i think i would be I really think I would make a great addition to the administrative staff and I would do great on fixing up the Honda/Acura pages. =p

Archival

Great idea on archiving Garage Talk. It was getting lengthy to say the least. We should determine at what length/how frequently we want to archive GT. -Nidhi 22:07, 19 March 2007 (UTC)
