Regenerative braking allows a vehicle to recapture part of the energy that would otherwise be 'lost' to heat when braking, and make use of that power by storing it in the vehicles on-board battery system. The vehicles electric motor(s) become a generator when coasting or braking, keeping the battery charged up and ready for the next start and accelerate situation. Because of constant stop and go driving conditions in city driving, this is why hybrid vehicles are more efficient in city use.
