Recent Changes

  • At the beginning of 30 Spetember, 2007, Ford Australia gave its Focus a safety update. At that time, motorists can opt safety packs for half price including Traction Control, Stability Control, Emergency Brake Assist and various airbags. Five models in the current Focus range have dual airbags and ABS with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution as standard but the base model CL can get front side and curtain airbags, stability control, traction control and brake assist as optional extras at $800 AUD.
  • Ford Australia chose summer in 2007 to lauch the new Focus CC.
  • July 2008 sees the internet debut of the Ford Focus RS, weeks ahead of its official London Motor Show unveiling. The rocket hot hatch is tapped to produced a smoldering 300 very blown hp and will go on sale in Europe in early 2009.[1]
  • Late August 2007, ford took the wraps off of the 50 unit limited edition 2008 Ford Focus ST Black Edition. [2]
  • For 2008, keeping inline with Ford Europe's new "Kinetic" design philosophy by CoD Martin Smith, the Ford Focus recieves a facelift.[3]
  • Ford UK has released yet another limited edition variant of the Ford Focus (this time of the Focus ST) dubbed the ST500. Only 500 units will be produced and it will only be available in the UK. Power will come from a five cylinder, 2.5 litre Duratec engine churning out 221 horsepower at 6,100 rpm, and 236 ft-lb of torque at 1,600 rpm. The ST500 is distinguished by scarlet leather Recaro seats, matching upholstery, xenon headlights, auto-dimming rear view mirror, rain-sensing windshield wipers, solar-reflect windscreen, ST500 badging and metallic black with silver racing stripe livery inspired by the GT40's 1-2-3 finish at Le Mans in '66. Pricing starts at £20,495 (US$42,700). [4]
  • Hot on the heels of the facelifted regular Ford Focus and the introduction of the limited edition ST500 the previos day, Ford has unveiled a facelifted Focus ST for 2008. Due to hit showrooms in March next year as a 2009 model, The car features styling borrowed from its highly succesful older brother, the Mondeo. A sporty front grille, a revised tailgate and a new bumper with an integrated diffuser and new tailpipe design, integrated foglamps and 18in alloys, a new center console with an engine starter button as well as new features such as a 230V power outlet and audio jack distinguishes the ST from its regular stablemate. The engine bay remains unchanged. [5]
  • For 2009, the Ford Focus CC receives the Mondeo-esque facelift now gracing all non-North American Focus models.[6]

Reliability

The European Focus has suffered from some recall issues, but in 2002, according to German reports and surveys, the Focus was claimed to be the most reliable car between 1 to 3 years old on the German car market. This was a remarkable feat as the Focus was competing against German prestige manufacturers as well as Japanese manufacturers, all of which have strong reputations for quality and reliability.

However the European focus in reality does have some reliability problems. Firstly the first model loved coil packs and after a recent jump in price of 70 euro in ireland of these it can be costly to replace. Another thing this car was fond of was wheel bearings. Recently some older models have starrted to give steering rack trouble.

The '05 European model had a recall on washer jets that used to leak onto the spark plugs. The fix was a rubber seal between them and the bonnet. Another problem is that a leak tends to appear in the passenger footwell where the fuseboard is housed so this causes problems. Bluetooth modules also give trouble but are usually replaced under warranty.

RECALL ALERT: 2008-2009 Focus diesel models had to be recalled because of a brake booster issue. The booster can be interupted resulting in hard brake pedal feel and a longer stopping distance. Diesel Mondeos are also affected. [7]

First Generation/Origins (1998–2004)

The 1998 Ford Focus sported the "New Edge" design that was distinctive and with the Zetec range of engines from 1.4 to the 2.0 all DOHC all though there are two categories of "Zetecs" the Yamaha-Mazda-Ford developed Zetec-S and SE and the Ford "Zeta" 1.8 and 2.0 engines the two engine categories are unrelated but they still carry the same name. the Platform that is used is the CW170 and is used worldwide to this day except for the European Mk2. the (U.S) 2008 Ford Focus uses the CW170 with a new Body shell. Reliability was a strong point of the Focus but at the car's early life there were recalls for the Fuel Pump motor and Airbag sensors. once those issues were fixed the car proved itself solid and reliable thus becoming one of the rare Fords to have earned reliability credentials in Europe AND in the U.S

The car was available in various body styles ranging from the standard sedan to the Hatchback versions and finally the station wagon version and it is still available in the European MK 2. the hatchback versions were discontinued in the U.S replaced by a coupe and a sedan.

Engines ( Zetec, Sigma Family, Not available in the U.S)

1.4 L DOHC giving 75 HP

1.6 L DOHC giving 100 HP with addition of TI-VCT ( Ford's own VTEC system ) only for MK2 and has an output of 125 HP two versions of this engine are available the Zetec-S (SilverTop, aka the CoilEater) and the low torque Zetec-SE (Black Top)

( Zetec, Zeta Family, Available in the U.S except for the 1.8)

1.8 L DOHC giving 116 HP

2.0 L DOHC giving 130 HP in 2003 A special version was sold in Europe called the ST170 and was tuned by Cosworth featured a reworked head and VCT ( intake only) and giving 170 HP all though it was badged as a Duratec But it's a Zetec this engine was mated to the Getrag 6-speed transmission

Transmissions

Ford's ever popular MTX-75 was used in the Manual transmission models (Zetec 1.8 and up) it is one the most reliable transaxle transmissions as it can run to 120000 KM without a problem the IB-5 was used in Zetec Sigma family and is a different story these units were reliable until they reach 100000 KM and it is due for an overhaul, the first signs for this repair is when the speedometer stops functioning while running in fifth gear above 100 KM/H

the automatic transmission was Ford's proven and easy to repair A4AXN unit

Worldwide

  • In 2008, Ford Australia has announced that they will be building the Ford Focus at the Broadmeadows plant in 2011 and they'll be exporting those cars to the asia-pacific. But it won't happen as Ford decided to build a 4 cylinder version of their Falcon in the near future.

Design quirks and oddities

  • In Australia, the 2005 advertisement got attention by ABC's comedy show The Chaser's War On Everything. They road tested the new ad campaign for the Ford Focus featuring Jackie'O and in the advert, she puts a goldfish bowl full of water with a goldfish in the front seat unrestrained. As she drove through corners and over a speed hump, water isn't spilled on the seats because of the claimed smooth ride. In another ad, Jackie'O left a chihuahua in a pink handbag on top of the roof and drove off around the city until she parked the car in a parking bay. Chris Taylor, one of the Chasers bought a Ford Focus and took it to the test to determine whether the ads can be done in real life. Firstly, he started with the ad with the goldfish but instead of putting the goldfish bowl in the front seat, Chris instead put on the middle of the backseat and drove like what is done in the ad but however, the bowl was knocked off and tipping according to which corner Chris is driving into spilling water but when he hit the brakes, the bowl fell off the backseat. In a test run with a chihuahua on top, Chris drove and the dog remained on top of the car but not for long as Chris hit the brakes when coming to a T-intersection in which the dog had slid off and fell onto the road and the dog got run over by an oncoming dog.

It is not recommended to put a toy dog on a roof of a car.

Awards

  • The Ford Focus has been awarded for 2004 Ireland's Car Of The Year.
  • 2005 RACV Australia's Best Mid-size Car Under $28,000
