Regenerative braking allows a vehicle to recapture part of the energy that would otherwise be 'lost' to heat when braking, and make use of that power by storing it in the vehicles on-board battery system. The vehicles electric motor(s) become a generator when coasting or braking, this is why hybrid vehicles are more efficient in city driving because of constant stop and go driving conditions.
