The Fiat 127 was introduced in 1971 and was made in Italy until 1983 where it was replaced by the Fiat uno. It was build for a longer period of time under various names and companies. It was to replace the Fiat 850 as fiats supermini hatchback. It came with a front wheel drive transverse engine configuration, which meant that the engine and gearbox took op less space making 80 percent of the floor space was available for passengers and luggage. Furthermore the front suspension was Macpherson type, fitted with a roll-bar and the rear suspension was build around a transverse leaf spring which acted as a roll-bar too. The car also featured front disc breaks. Low weight and this new suspension made the car a nimble and well handling car for its type.
The transverse engine had been tested in mechanical identical Autobianchi A112 already from 1969. The transverse engine had also been used in the Fiat 128.
