The Mercury Mariner debuted in late 2004 as a 2005 crossover SUV, essentially a re-skinned Ford Escape with minor enhancements. The Ford Escape was jointly developed with Mazda, in which Ford owns a controlling interest, and was released a few months after the nearly-identical Mazda Tribute. The Escape is sold in Europe as the Ford Maverick while the Mariner is not.
See Wikicars' comprehensive Mercury mariner review.
Recent Changes
The Mariner along with the Escape have been significantly redesigned for the 2008 model year. The front has a larger grille with a shield design akin to Volkswagen and Audi models of recent years. The interior is all new with a square, crisp center stack and styled gauges. The taillights mimic those of the Mountaineer with clear lenses.
