The Ford Ka is a small city car launched by Ford in 1996 to compete with cars such as the Mini One, Seat Arosa, and Smart ForTwo (formerly City Coupe). The European version is produced in Spain, whereas the Latin American version is produced in Brazil. In 2008 it will be replaced by a car co-developed by Fiat utilising the Fiat Panda platform.
Recent Changes
Subtle modifications have occured with the Ka since it's 1996 launch, the most notable of which involved styling changes.
Styles and Major Options
The Ka has quite a model history. Since 1996, a hatchback, convertible and e-Ka model have been produced.
European Hatchback
The European version of the Ford Ka uses distinctive styling which remains relevant even today - eleven years after it's release. Currently, all Ka models except for the SportKa come with a 1.3 engine, with 1297cc. Pricing for July 2007 in the UK starts at £7,095 for the Ka Studio, and ends at £9,995 for the SportKa. Trim levels currently include Ka Studio, Ka Style, Ka Style Climate, Ka Zetec, Ka Zetec Climate, Ka Luxury, and the Sportka SE.
Latin American Hatchback
The Latin American version of the Ford Ka is built in Brazil and less renowned than it's European cousin. In 2003 a facelift brought a lease of life to the range, and the main differences between it and the European model are it's taller taillights, and the altered front grille. It is available with a 1.0 or a 1.6 - both of which are 4cyl units.
SportKa SE
The Ford SportKa was launched after the standard Ka, and uses either a 1.3 or a 1.6 engine - with power ranging from 68 bhp (1.3) to 94 bhp (1.6). It is widely regarded as the sports variant of the range, and comes with an attractive, wider body kit which gives a impression of speed. The suspension has been given a more sporty touch to go with the extra power with the SportKa too.
StreetKa
Although discontinued in 2006, the StreetKa was the convertible model in the range, and came only with the 1.6 taken from an old Fiesta. Sales were meagre compared to the hatchback sales, one of the reasons for it being discontinued. Various special edition models including the StreetKa Red and the Winter Edition took to the road to try and boost sales, but in the end it was discontinued.
e-Ka
Launched in 2000, the Ford e-Ka was a prototype electric Ford Ka powered by a new generation of lithium ion high-tech batteries. Ford was, at the time, the first manufacturer to use this kind of propulsion for a car. It produced 88 bhp and was capable of 96 mph.
