The Mercury Milan is a midsize luxury sport sedan based on the Ford CD3 platform. The Milan carries unique front and rear fascia designs. The Milan was originally launched as a replacement for the Mercury Sable (2006), and it also fills the gap since the discontinuation of the Mercury Mystique in 2000.
The Milan was unveiled at the 2005 Chicago Auto Show on February 9. Earlier, at the 2005 Detroit Auto Show, a hybrid version was announced for the 2009 model year.
The Milan is available with a five-speed manual, or five or six-speed automatics. All wheel drive will be added for 2007, and a hybrid version with Ford's 2nd generation hybrid engine will be available in late 2008. Milan Pricing starts at $19,690.
The Milan, along with the Mercury brand, will cease production following the 2010 model year.
The Milan fits in a line of sedans by Mercury smallest to largest.
- Mercury Milan Mid-Size
- Mercury Sable Large Sedan
- Mercury Grand Marquis Full-Size

Hybrid Models
A hybrid model is promised for year 2009. Pre-production spyshots of the 2008 Ford Fusion show the hybrid model will have a drivetrain similar to the Ford Escape Hybrid. A full article on the Fusion Hybrid is available from LeftLaneNews. It is expected the Milan Hybrid will be mechanically identical.
Unique Attributes
The Milan is the only car in its class to offer AWD for under $30,000.
Current Generation: 2006-Present
With its launch, the Milan debuted with Mercury's signature Satin Waterfall grille design, which has become the company's trademark look for the rest of the Mercury model lineup. Production of the Milan started mid 2005.
Changes to the CD3 platform from the Mazda6 include stretching it by 1.2 inches in width and 5.5 inches in length, strengthening it, and modifying the suspension for a more compliant ride. Like the Mazda, the Milan uses the Mazda-designed 2.3L Duratec I4 and Ford-designed 3.0L Duratec V6. For 2007 Class exclusive AWD was added.
The Mercury Milan's main competetion is the Acura TSX Saab 9-3 and Saturn Aura. The Milan shares some interior parts such as part of the console and seats with the otherwise unrelated European Ford Mondeo. Both automatic and manual transmissions are available though only the manual transmission is available with the I4 engine.
What's Best About Milan
- "This Mercury has that "just right" look about it, and it's about time." — New Car Test Drive
- "Estimated fuel economy is decent: 23 mpg in the city and 31 on the highway with the 4-cylinder and manual transmission and at 21 and 29 with the V6 and automatic." — MSN Autos
- "The Milan is pretty well-equipped. Standard items include air conditioning, a power driver's seat, cruise control, an AM/FM/CD/MP3 player, a tachometer, a tilt-telescopic steering wheel and power windows, heated mirrors and locks with remote keyless entry." — MSN Autos
Criticisms
- "...A driver must be careful backing up because he can't see where the rear of the car ends or what's directly behind it. Too bad no rear-obstacle-detection system is available." — MSN Autos
- "The Milan is quick with the V6, which works with the responsive 6-speed automatic transmission and loafs at 2100 rpm at 70 mph. But expect just average highway performance with the 4-cylinder engine, which has considerably less power and torque." — MSN Autos
Worldwide
- The Mercury Milan is only sold to the U.S.and Mexican Markets.
Design quirks and oddities
- Like all Mercurys it has a Satin Finish Front Grille.
Awards
- Mercury Milan won Auto Pacific's 2006 vehicle Satisfaction Award for Midsize-Cars.
- First six speed automatic transmission in the medium car class.
- Class exclusive AWD.
- 2007 Consumer Guide Recommended Midsize-Car.
- The 2007 Mercury Milan was the Highest Ranked Mid-Sized Sedan by J.D. Power in Initial Quality.
- 2007 Second Quarter U.S. Global Quality Research System Study, 2nd Place Winner The Mercury Milan.
- Consumer Reports ranked the Mercury Milan one of the most reliable cars available in the U.S.
- A Consumers Digest Best Buy - 2 years running. For the second year in a row, Consumers Digest has named the Mercury Milan a Best Buy. Continuing its history of exceptional value, the 2008 Milan impressed Consumers Digest with "a winning combo of agreeable performance, comfort and utility."
Sale Numbers
- In February 2008 Milan Sold 2,544 Units Down 12.2% From February 2007.
- For 2007 Mercury Milan Sold 37,244 Units UP 3.9% From Total 2006 Sales.
Production
- Since the Milan went on sale in the fall of 2005 it has sold exactly 83,415 as of February 2008.
