The Jaguar X-Type is an luxury vehicle. This model of motorcar first began production in 2001 (as a 2002 model) and remains in production at Jaguar's Halewood facility in England.
The X-TYPE is the smallest of the current Jaguar saloon (sedan) cars, and was designed to build on the success of the S-Type, although it takes many styling cues from the XJ series.
On July 15 2009, it was announced that the X-Type nameplate and model range will be dropped by 2010 as Jaguar aims to move its brand image upmarket again. Europe will be the last market to sell the car. It has good handling — the all wheel drive system which is tuned to send 60% of engine power to the rear wheels and 40% to the front for a sportier feel.
See Wikicars' comprehensive Jaguar X-Type Review.
Recent Changes
- For 2008, the aging X-Type recieves yet another facelift for the 09 model year as well as a host of other mechanical changes. [1] Jaguar also announced that the X-Type will no longer be sold in the US Market. The new X-Type, however, will soldier on in Europe. [2]
Styles and Major Options
The initial version of the X-TYPE was a saloon. In early 2004, this was joined by an estate version, making it the first ever Jaguar estate car, in addition to the first to use a diesel engine. The estate version was launched to mixed reception. In the United States, the estate is officially known as the Sportwagon.
Powertrain
The X-TYPE is equipped in the United States with either a 192 hp (143 kW) 2.5 L or a 227 hp (169 kW) 3.0 L Jaguar AJ-V6 engine and all wheel drive. The X-TYPE was also available with a 2.1 L V6 front wheel drive In Europe, although this was discontinued shortly after the launch of the diesel variants. The X-TYPE is also available with 2 diesel engines - a 2.0L 128 hp 4 cylinder introduced in 2003 and a 2.2 L 153 hp 4 cylinder diesel engine introduced in mid-2005, all with front wheel drive only.

Market and sales
The X-TYPE was designed as a direct competitor to the BMW 3 Series and the Mercedes-Benz C-Class. Sales have been poor, however, blamed on its resemblance to the larger XJ which was traditionally bought by older customers, not the younger ones that Jaguar craved. Initially projected to surpass 100,000 annual sales, the X-TYPE peaked at 50,000 in 2003.
(Worth noting BMW 3 Series has many more variants than the X-Type comes in, so is therefore more cars in the same body shell, than the X-Type, [which has fewer model variations at any one time]). Hence comparitive sales figures need to be treated accordingly.
Sales in the United States, its primary market, dropped from 21,542 in 2004 to 10,941 in 2005. BMW sold 106,950 3 Series cars in the U.S. in 2005, while Mercedes-Benz sold 60,658 C-Class cars and Audi sold 48,922 A4 and S4 models. Only Lexus' IS 300 posted similarly disappointing sales. Despite these poor numbers, the X-TYPE is Jaguar's best-selling model, accounting for 36% of overall sales.
The model is scheduled to remain in production through 2009 in Europe although sales have been discontinued in the US. This is an extremely long production cycle for a modern automobile, especially one with poor sales. It is unlikely that the model will be replaced when production ends, as Jaguar has expressed a desire to be seen as a 'Premium Niche' brand, and will look to move upmarket following the takeover by Tata and concentrate on sales in more expensive vehicle categories.
The X-TYPE is likely to end production once Land Rover launches a second vehicle based on the Freelander platform which will occupy production at the Halewood plant in Merseyside, England where the X-Type is produced.
Design quirks and oddities
The Jaguar X-Type earned 11 points out of 14 in RACV's Personal Security Rating making the car the most secure car in 2005. The Rover 75 is second safest from car thieves with 10 points.
In the What Women Want survey conducted by the RACV in 2003, the X-Type is the most popular choice among women buying a Jaguar.
