On May 25 2010, [[Volkswagen]] AG officially acquired a 90% stake in the company which heretofore has been owned outright by the Giugiaro family. The family has been left with 10% ownership. Volkswagen is expected to retain 975 employees at Italdesign, absorbing them to its own design department, along with [[Giorgetto Giugiaro]] and his son, [[Fabrizio Giugiaro|Fabrizio]].

Today, the company is known for the work of its subsidiary, Giugiaro Design, home of famed automobile designer, Giorgetto Giugiaro. However, Italdesign also does automotive engineering, prototyping, and testing.
