After 15 successful model years, the '''[[Pontiac]] Firebird''' would become an entirely different animal with the 3rd and 4th gen models. The Firebird (and of course the [[Chevrolet Camaro]]) would now put a much greater emphasis on utility, modern aerodynamic styling, and, of course, fuel economy. The 3rd gen Firebird would last ''almost'' as long as its 2nd gen predecessor, lasting 11 model years, and would be redesigned in 1993. The final 4th gen Firebird would ultimately be the best built, most economical and fastest Firebird ever before GM pulled the plug on them at the end of 2002 after 36 model years.

==3rd Generation (1982-1992)==

===1982===

The Firebird was still a rear-drive 2+2 design, but it weighed in at about 300-400 lbs lighter than the 2nd gens. The sleek, aerodynamically styled body sported pop-up headlamps, and while it retained the same basic taillight design, the new body was also a hatchback with a fold-down rear seat. This greatly added to its utility, and was much better than the footlocker-sized trunk of the previous version. Dashboards eliminated the conventional glovebox, replaced with what some referred to as an "oversized wallet" in its place, a change not everyone approved of. There were now the base Firebird, the S/E (which replaced the Esprit), and of course the Trans Am. The Formula model unfortunately gone, but its absence was only temporary as it would return 5 years later.

There was a major shakeup in the drivetrain department as well. The base engine in the base model was now the 92 hp "Iron Duke" 2.5L (151 cid) I4. Optional was the Chevrolet-built 112 hp 2.8L (173 cid) V6, and the 150 hp Chevrolet-built 5.0L (305 cid) V8. There would be no more Pontiac-produced V8s at all in this generation (or any other car, for that matter) - these were now all considered "corporate" engines. This was a decision that would disappoint many hardcore Pontiac fans - to them, a Chevy-powered V8 Pontiac just wasn't right... but if they wanted a new Pontiac, they didn't have much choice. The S/E models had the 2.8 V6 as standard, with the 305 as an option, but the Trans Am had a choice of 2 305s - a 150 hp 4bbl version, or an all-new 165 "cross-fire injection" version, which only came with a 3-speed automatic. The crossfires got an off-centered bulged hood similar in design to the previous Turbo 4.9 hoods, and they were optional on the base 305 T/A. Pontiac had originally planned to use the Turbo 4.9 in the 3rd gen models but that plan was scrapped when it was decided that they were to use GM's "corporate" V8 engines instead. The crossfire-injection setup was the same system also used on the 1982 [[Chevrolet Corvette|Corvette]]. Some critics chided GM for the name "crossfire", joking that it sounded like a condition that should be covered under warranty instead of a fuel-delivery system ''("Stand back, kid! That engine is about to crossfire!")''

Performance was down a little bit compared to the 1981 Firebirds, and even a cross-fire Trans Am got sand kicked in its face by the reborn [[Ford Mustang]] GT, to add further insult to injury. Transmission choices for all models were a 4-speed manual (except the crossfire edition) or a 3-speed automatic. The WS6 option returned, and included 4 wheel disc brakes, P215/65R15 Goodyear Eagle GT radials with 15" cast aluminum wheels, stiffer springs, thicker front and rear sway bars, and a high ratio 12.7:1 steering box.

===1983===

Not many visual changes for 1983 Firebirds other than very subtle ones. 4-speed automatics replaced the 3-speed units on the V6 and V8 engines (except the crossfire, which still used the 3-speed), and 5-speed manuals became available also (except the base I4 and, again, the crossfire). And speaking of the crossfire, it was dumped mid-season, replaced by a 190 hp High Output 305 4bbl V8, giving the Trans Am a big shot in the arm as far as power (and reputation) was concerned, and a Trans Am driver no longer had to lay low at a stoplight if a Mustang GT pulled along side of it. The H.O. engine would be available with either a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic. The Iron Duke I4, 2.8 V6 and "regular" 305 V8s continued as before.

===1984===

Firebirds were enjoying great sales increases, and by now the 3rd gen Firebirds were definitely coming into their own among pony car fans with their sleek looks, hot engines, and raw, all-American V8/rear drive power. The Trans Am celebrated its 15th birthday this year, so Pontiac threw it a little celebration with the 15th Anniversary edition. While the 15th Anniversary Trans Am wasn't quite as outrageous as the 2nd gen 10th Anniversary model, it nonetheless had some very distinct styling cues, such as monotone white paint (which included the rims), white leather interior... even the taillights were striped white. On the white body were blue accents and hood decal. The WS6 suspensions were upgraded slightly, and they also borrowed the 245/50VR16 tires from the Corvette - the first time a 16" tire would be used on an F body. "Lesser" Trans Ams continued as before with little change, as did the base Firebird and S/E. A new rim design on the S/E and Trans Am replaced the previous "bowling-ball" capped design (used mostly for aerodynamics. Most owners trashed them, and one with the originals still intact would be a rare sight today).

===1985===

The Firebird would receive its first real visual change across the board this year. The nose and tail were now more rounded than before - the nose deleted its faux-grille and could have integrated fog-lights for the first time, and the taillights were also revised with a new subtle vertical and horizontal grid pattern. The dashboard and console were changed slightly also, the automatic transmission selector was now a T-handle, replacing the ball with the button atop the shifter. The base I4 continued, but the 2.8 V6 saw an hp increase to 135 and received multi-port fuel injection. Base and H.O. 305 continued as well, but the big news this year was an all-new 205 hp Tuned Port Injection (TPI) 305. This would be the first 3rd gen Trans Am to break the 200-hp barrier, and it was available only with the 4-speed automatic transmission. 16" rims were standard on the TPI T/As. The "turbo-bulge" hood was discontinued on Trans Ams, replaced with twin, non-functional louvered nostrils.

And last but not least was the return of the "screaming chicken" hood decal option on Trans Ams, last seen in 1981. Its design was of course smaller and not quite as outrageous as the previous versions in which some of them even took up virtually the ''entire hood!'' There were some that applauded the chicken decal return, but many critics couldn't help but wonder if such a decal looked out of place on a 3rd gen model, especially since the 3rd gens didn't have a shaker hood to complete the look - in some eyes it just didn't work. Plus, even with the power increases, sales were down versus last year's figures.

===1986===

The biggest across-the-board visual change for all models was the addition of the now-mandatory center-high-mounted-stop-lamp atop the rear hatch. The 305 H.0. was dropped early in the model year due to fuel-boiling issues. S/E models were also no more, as was (thankfully) the rarely-ordered I4 engine in the base models - the 2.8 V6 was now the standard engine. The "regular" and TPI 305s continued as before. Trans Am rear spoilers were now the wrap-around type, replacing the raised units. All others still had the raised spoiler.

===1987===

The center-high-mounted-stop-lamp was relocated from atop the rear hatch and integrated into the rear spoiler, which was about the only visual change. The "screaming chicken" Trans Am hood decal finally flew away for good this year, never to return. Base and Trans Ams of course continued, but 1987 saw the addition of a new model and the return of an old one; The '''GTA''' and '''Formula''', respectively. The GTA was now the top-dog Trans Am model, and has such visual enhancements as gold 16" flat mesh diamond spoke wheels and special badging. The Formula, back after a 5 year absence, reprised its role as a go-between for the base and the Trans Am. While it had the looks of the base Firebird, it could have the Trans Am powertrains (some called such models "sleepers"). It was basically the same idea as [[Ford]]'s [[Ford Mustang|Mustang]] 5.0 LX. Base and Formulas got new taillights that incorporated separate amber turn signal lenses, and all Formulas used the previous "turbo" hood with the off-center hood bulge that was last seen as a Trans Am option in 1984.

The 2.8 V6 and the 305 4bbl on the base continued, but the big news this year was the much-anticipated arrival of the 210 horse TPI 5.7L (350 cid) V8 for the GTA, Trans Am and Formula models. The Firebird's 350 TPI was rated 10-15 less than the comparably-equipped Camaro IROC-Zs due to the Pontiac's lower hoodline, which necessitated a more stringent induction system, resulting in the hp decrease. The 350 TPI was available only with the 4-speed automatic, but the 305 TPI could now be had with a 5-speed manual. The 350 was standard in the GTA, although the lesser 305 TPI could be had as a "credit" option - plus it was your only choice if you desired a 5-speed manual. TPI models got a new 140 MPH speedo, while the "regular" 305 and base models got a 110 MPH unit.

===1988===

The base 170 hp 305 finally gets throttle-body fuel injection (TBI) this year, so now all Firebird engines are fuel-injected. The Formula got its own aluminum 16" wheel design not shared with other Firebirds. Base models, Trans Ams and GTAs continued otherwise unchanged other than a slightly revised 16" rim design for the T/As and GTAs, and could now be had in various body colors instead of just gold. Digital dashboards became an option on Trans Ams and GTAs, which got a new steering wheel with integrated stereo controls. GTAs also got another interesting optional feature this year only: a notchback decklid design, which eliminated the wraparound rear window - it was now flat and nearly vertical. Supposedly only 718 were sold, making one a very rare sight today. Another interesting sales fact was that for the first time since 1974, the Formula would outsell the Trans Am once again, although that's surely a result of many potential Trans Am buyers ponying up extra for the top-dog GTA instead of settling for the "regular" Trans Am.

===1989===

No visual changes to speak of for any Firebird model. All Firebirds would get the Vehicle Anti Theft System (VATS) this year, which included a special computer chip on the ignition key that would help prevent the vehicle from being "hotwired", so to speak. Rear seats (for those who dared to actually sit back there) now had shoulder belts. The GTA's unpopular one-year-wonder notchback option was dropped. This year, GM offered a dual catalytic converter option for the 305 and 350 TPI engines, boosting their respective horsepower ratings to 230 and 240.

All that was fine and dandy, but the big news was the 20th Anniversary Edition Pace Car Trans Am. This would be the first Anniversary Edition Trans Am that didn't concentrate solely on look-at-me paint shemes and decals like the previous Anniversary models (although it could be had with Pace Car door decals if so desired), and instead offered a powertrain not available on any other Firebird model; the (underrated) 250 hp 3.8L (231 cid) turbo intercooled V6 that last saw duty in the 1987 [[Buick Grand National]]. Although it was technically a Trans Am, it was based on the GTA, resulting in kind of a cross between the two. All were white with tan leather or cloth, and could have T-top or hardtop. This would be the first time a turbo engine was available in the Trans Am since 1981, the first time a Trans Am engine wouldn't be shared with the Formula since the 1976 455, and the first time a 6-cylinder engine was offered in a Trans Am... ever. ''Car and Driver'' magazine tested one, measuring a 4.6 second 0-60 time and a 13.4 1/4 mile time - almost unheard of back in 1989 unless you had a [[Lamborghini]], and still very respectable times even today.

1555 models were sold, and ''supposedly'' a very small handful were a color other than white, but they were reportedly GM test mules and not believed to have been sold to the general public.

===1990===

The turbo Anniversary model was gone, so things got back to normal for the Firebird line, relatively speaking. This was a shortened model year due to the early introduction of the 1991 models, but there were still a few changes this year, not the least of which was a now-standard driver's side airbag appeared (which eliminated the integrated stereo controls). Also the 2.8 V6 was dropped in the base models, being replaced by a new 140 hp 3.1 (191 cid) V6. Formulas and Trans Ams still came standard with the 170 hp 305 TBI, with the 305 and 350 TPI as optional. The 350 TPI was still standard fare in the GTA, with the 305 TPI available as a credit option. Dashboards were ever-so-slighty revised as well, and the digital dash option was discontinued. Rear seatbacks were no longer divided in the middle, they were now one piece.

===1991===

Introduced in March, 1990 as early 1991 models, all Firebirds got a restyled nose modeled after the Banshee show car, and all models now shared the same fiberglass wraparound rear spoiler. The CHMSL was relocated inside the top of the rear window. Base, Trans Ams and GTAs received a new ground effects design, a look which didn't please everyone, but at least it was optional. The Formulas could not have the ground effects. Trans Ams and GTAs got updated 2 piece taillights with PONTIAC scripted in orange across the panels.

The convertible bodystyle returned this year, the first factory ragtop Firebird since 1969. It was available only as a base or Trans Am, and could not be had with the 5.7 engine. The 5.7's dual-cat option was now standard, putting hp now at 245. Another Firebird model, the '''Firehawk''', would debut this year as an option package on the Formula. The Firehawk was the brainchild of Ed Hamburger of Street Legal Performance (SLP), and it had a 350 hp version of the 350 with a 6-speed manual borrowed from the Corvette. Needless to say its performance was phenomenal, but it was also horrendously expensive (stickering at over $50,000). A reported 8 were sold in 1991.

===1992===

1992 models were pretty much untouched, as the design had pretty much run its course and surely most buyers were waiting for the all-new 1993 model. All models received improved sealants in the body in various places in an attempt to reduce squeaks and rattles (a tall order in a 3rd gen F body). Total production this year was less than 28,000, but Firehawk sales jumped to a grand total of 25.

An all-new 4th generation Firebird was waiting in the wings next year, and it was definitely time.

==4th Generation (1993-2002)==

===1993===

After being threatened with extinction once again, an all new 4th gen Firebird debuted for 1993, along with its Camaro twin. While the 1st, 2nd and 3rd gen Firebirds were all very different from each other, the 4th gen was more or less an updated 3rd gen model, even sharing the same 101" platform, although it was 2 inches wider and taller, and about a 1/2 inch longer. The 4th gen was also a 3-door hatchback model like the 3rd gen and retained its pop-up headlights, but the body panels were all new and had new dent and rust-resistant fenders, doors and decklid. Curb weights were about the same, but power (and build quality) was way up over the 3rd gens. Dual airbags were standard (a first for a GM model), as well as anti-lock brakes. T-tops were available on all models.

In this generation, there were base, Formula and Trans Am models. The GTA would not be carried over. Drivetrains were greatly simplified in this generation also, starting with a 160 hp 3.4L (207 cid) V6 as standard for the base model with either a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic, while a 275 hp 5.7L (350 cid) '''LT1''' V8 was standard fare for the Formula and Trans Am. This time the top engine not only got a standard manual transmission, it was a 6-speed to boot. 4-speed automatics were also available. Formulas once again split the difference between the base Firebird and the Trans Am. The SLP Firehawk package was available again, but this time it was available on the Trans Am (not until 1999) as well as the Formula, and had a 300 hp LT1.

===1994===

Convertibles were back this year after a year hiatus, and available on all models (including the Formula, a first). There were no visual changes, but V8 models got the dreaded CAGS forced 1-4 upshift on light acceleration (although a quick blip on the gas while changing gears would cancel it). The LT1 got a few minor changes, but hp stayed the same at 275. A one-year-wonder Trans Am GT was available this year only. Being the 25th anniversary of the Trans Am, Pontiac of course offered a 25th Anniversary Edition, but this time it was very much like the 15th Anniversary, which meant this one was also white (inside and out) with blue accents, hood and decklid stripe. It was available as either a hatchback or convertible. Base, Formula and "regular" Trans Ams continued as before.

===1995===

Formulas and Trans Ams got new 5-spoke rims and could now have traction control. Formulas no longer had "Formula V8" decals, they now read simply "Formula". A couple of new color choices became available, but the big news for the base model was the mid-year introduction of the 200 hp 3.8L (231 cid) V6 as an option.

===1996===

The 3.4 V6 was dropped and the 200 hp 3.8 was now standard on the base models. For those keeping score, the base Firebird this year kicked out more horsepower than the most powerful Trans Am did in 1984 (ain't technology wonderful?) The base also got the 5-spoke rims of the Formula and Trans Am, doing away with the rather bizarre design of the previous base rims. Formulas and Trans Ams got a 10 hp power increase to 285, but the big news this year was the return of the '''WS6''' package. Previously an upgraded suspension option, WS6 was now an engine upgrade (and suspension upgrade), and resurrected the '''Ram Air''' moniker, not used since 1970. Formulas and Trans Ams so equipped got a 20 hp increase to 305, and got twin forward-facing hood scoops, not unlike the 2nd gen Formula hood design.

===1997===

Daytime running lamps became standard this year (using the parking lights). The WS6 package introduced last year was now available on the convertible Formula and Trans Ams. Air conditioning became standard on all models, and all models got a redesigned console that included 4 cupholders (2 in front, 2 in back) and 2 power outlets. Base, Formula and Trans Ams otherwise continued with no other changes.

===1998===

Firebirds got their first (and last) real major upgrade this year. Visually, front ends were new with quad pop-up headlamps, replacing the duals, and all models got standard fog lamps. The rear stayed basically the same, but instead of the grid pattern on the taillights, it was now a honeycomb pattern. Formulas were no longer offered as convertibles. Base Firebirds still used the 3.8 V6, but the LT1s were discarded in favor of a new '''LS1''', borrowed from the [[Chevrolet Corvette|Corvette]]. The LS1 was still 5.7 liters, but it was a tad smaller than the LT1 (346 vs 350 cid)... but the LS1s had a 20 hp increase for a total of 305 (the same figure as last year's WS6 LT1). WS6s were carried over as well, and they were now rated at 320 hp. They got new, more pronounced twin hood scoops over last year's smaller scoops. T-tops were now standard on the Trans Am. Firehawks carried over, and got subsequent horsepower increases as well. The horsepower ratings for these cars were heavily underrated by General Motors to protect base model Corvette sales. The LS1 F-bodies were never "de-tuned". Dyno tests of completely stock LS1 F-bodies confirm this, as these cars put out over 300 rear-wheel horsepower consistently.

===1999===

Some color changes and traction control was now an option on the base models. Gas tanks were enlarged to 16.8 gallons vs 15.5. Base, Formula and Trans Ams continued as well as the WS6 package for the Formulas and T/As. It was anniversary time again for the Trans Am, hence the 30th Anniversary model (and unfortunately the last anniversary model). This one was also white inside and out with blue accents (including the rims), and got 2 blue stripes for the hood and decklid, harking back to the original 1969 Trans Am. All 30th T/As were WS6 models, and were either a hatchback or convertible (with a blue top, again as a tribute to the original '69 model). And, adhering to the tradition of past Anniversary/Pace Car models, they were available with Pace Car door decals if so desired.

===2000===

Base, Formula and Trans Ams continued unchanged, aside from some more color shuffling.

===2001===

LS1 engines got a 5 hp increase to 310 for the non-WS6, 325 for the WS6. Again, these ratings were heavily underrated by GM. Base 3.8 engines stayed the same at 200. The WS6 package was unfortunately no longer available on the Formula, becoming a Trans Am exclusive this year. WS6 Formulas are very rare, less than 1000 total were made from 1998-2000. On the other side of the coin, WS6 Trans Ams were by now outselling the "regular" Trans Ams. A gorgeous new Sunset Orange Metallic color was introduced this year.

===2002===

Base Firebirds now had power windows and locks as standard equipment, and T-tops became standard on the Formulas - both of which continued unchanged for their final year. A Commemorative Collector Edition Trans Am was offered, being yellow with black accents and rims, and was either the hatch or a convertible. All had the WS6 package. The SLP Firehawk package was still available on either the Formula or Trans Ams, and there were various other packages, such as GMMG'S 380 hp Blackbird that helped the Firebird go out with a bang before being grounded permanently after this year.

The Lincoln Continental concept, the ultimate expression of American Luxury and the culmination of nearly two years of research and development, was unveiled at the 2002 Los Angeles Auto Show. Continental is a powerful but understated executive car with unique proportions that optimize space for the elegant, sophisticated and supremely comfortable interior. The design embraces features from Lincoln's past, such as center opening doors, but the execution is thoroughly modern.

Two important goals of the Lincoln design team were to maximize interior space and optimize ingress and egress. This led to the creation of a unique proportion, in which the Continental's cabin is centered within the wheelbase. The passenger space is exceptionally large, the trunk is cavernous, and a powerful 6.0-liter V-12 engine resides under the hood.

The powered center-opening doors are triggered by remote or simply by a touch of the flush aluminum door handles. The Continental's doors operate independently and with both doors open, the pillarless aperture is almost six feet wide. All this is made possible by articulating hinges that open to 90 degrees and a ring frame that adds structural rigidity along the A-pillar, rear roof pillar, sill and roof rails.

The headliner and the Eames lounge chair-inspired seats are covered in full-grain aniline leather dyed a creamy hue called Rhode Island Sand. A translucent silk panel shades the overhead fiber optic light strip. The flooring is a close-sheared midnight blue sheepskin. The instrument panel and doors are trimmed in a combination of Rhode Island Sand and Midnight Blue leather. The dark leather helps mask the transition to the window glass.

The Continental's full-width instrument panel is built around reconfigurable displays for engine functions and vehicle systems, including concierge and telematics features, navigation and the THX-certified audio system. The chaplets that ring the speedometer and other gauges displays are fixed to the glass for a jewel-like effect.

Built-in laptop tables stow in the console. The case holders built into the front seat backs fold down to allow an attachÃ© to be opened without removing it from the sleeve.

A cabinet between the rear seats houses crystal and a drinks dispenser. Each rear door has a large umbrella holder and compartments that can be personalized. The Continental, for example, is fitted with cigar humidors.

After almost 18 years, Ferrari finally admitted that the F90 existed and was made for the Sultan of Brunei in 1988. A brief passage in the 2005 Ferrari Annual outlined an impressive order of six bespoke supercars which were much more daring than anything Ferrari would have produced themselves.

The project was managed by Enrico Fumia, the head of the Research and Development department at Pininfarina. Fumia styled the car very similar to a Pininfarina Ethos Concept car made in the same period.

All six F90s used a Ferrari Testarossa
chassis which Pininfarina used to sculpt an entirely new body and interior on top of. The engines were stock units, producing 390 bhp to the rear wheels. Interestingly, the wheels were also left untouched.

Ferrari says one of the most striking design cues was the edge design that flows around the vehicle. Fumia describes this as the elliptical leit-motiv. This theme is extended to rear light cluster, rear wing, and door accents. The F90’s custom interior is surrounded completely with a glass greenhouse and the sunroof can be fully removed.

After ordering six F90s, the Sultan and his brother Prince Jefri spent the next ten years ordering custom supercars from Aston Martin, Rolls Royce, Bentley, Dauer and more. Just before they stopped the influx of supercars, six Ferrari FXs were made around the 512M and featured William’s F1 electro-hydraulic gearboxes.

So far, none of the Sultan’s special Ferraris have escaped Brunei. Only once was an F90 spotted in Monaco and was captured for a brief note in Cavallino magazine.

Detroit (USA), 14th January 2008 - Ferrari has brought two models - the 430 Scuderia and the 599 GTB Fiorano - to the 2008 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. Also on the stand this year, however, is a biofuel-powered technological demonstration prototype which uses the F430 Spider as a base.

Ferrari has chosen Detroit as the venue for the presentation at a biofuel-powered F430 Spider in recognition of growing interest in North America in alternative sources of energy. The development of an engine powered by the biofuel E85 comes as part of a research and development program announced during the Technological Innovation Conference held at Maranello last June as part of our 60th Anniversary Celebrations. On that particular occasion, Ferrari also unveiled projects focused on improving the energy of the whole car which would in turn lower fuel consumption and emissions levels. The ultimate aim being, of course, to cut the latter by 40% by 2012.

Once again, in fact, the track has proved an excellent testing ground for innovative solutions which, if successful, can then be passed on to production cars. Such is the efficiency of the transfer of track technology to road cars at Maranello that all of the Prancing Horse's cars can already use up to 10% ethanol without any modification whatsoever.

By developing this technological demonstration prototype however, Ferrari has proved category that it can offer the technological solutions demanded by the market demands without impinging on the distinctly sporty, high performance character and supreme driving pleasure of the unique cars it builds at Maranello.

In the case of the F430 Spider Biofuel, certain modifications were made to the fuel feed system and most importantly to the engine CPU to allow the engine use E85. Developing the CPU, two fuels (Flex Fuel) can be used by the engine with the same compression ratio. All of the other technical characteristics have remained unchanged with respect to a standard production engine, however. The use of this type of biofuel and the modifications made have resulted in a significant increase in maximum power output (+ 10 hp at the same rpm) and torque (+ 4%) yet overall weight was unchanged. The advantages to the environment translate too into a 5% drop in CO2 emissions.

The McLaren F1s were powered by a S70 V12, leading to McLaren and BMW signing an agreement to both develop their racing teams with the assistance of BMW Motorsport. This combination was successful in winning the 1995 24 Hours of Le Mans. However, by 1997 the F1 GTRs were no longer competitive against newer breeds of specially homologated supercars from Mercedes-Benz and Porsche. Due to their declining performance, McLaren pulled out of GT racing at the end of 1997.

Unwilling to give up so quickly, BMW Motorsport decided to move from grand tourers to Le Mans prototypes, open cockpit racing cars built specifically for racing and requiring no road legality regulations. During the 1997 decline of McLaren, BMW Motorsport announced a deal with WilliamsF1, at the time Formula One constructors champions, which would see Williams constructing the car's chassis and develop its aerodynamics for the 24 Hours of Le Mans. At the same time, BMW Motorsport turned to Schnitzer Motorsport, a long time BMW racing team, to be the factory team running the car, now dubbed the V12 LM.

The V12 LMs would use the same S70 V12 as the McLaren F1s, although it would be run in its 5990cc configuration. The chassis incorporated an early use of a raised foot box as well as a front diffuser for better aerodynamics and safety. 1998
Debuting at the 1998 24 Hours of Le Mans test day in May, the two V12 LM chassis set times which were not favorable, their best lap placing them 11th behind factory entries from Porsche, Toyota, Nissan, and Mercedes-Benz, all of which were running grand tourer-style cars instead of the theoretically faster Le Mans prototypes. By time qualifying for the race came around in June, the BMWs had improved to 6th fastest in qualifying, placing behind two Porsches, two Mercedes, and a Toyota.

Unfortunately, during the race both cars suffered quickly. Vibrations were detected in the drivetrains while at speed. In order to not risk catastrophic failure of the car at speed, the team quickly retired both cars from the event after they had only covered 43 laps for car #2 and 60 laps for car #1.

Following the teams dismal results at Le Mans, further testing found that the aerodynamics and cooling of the car were poorly planned, and that the car could only perform best if ambient temperatures were at ideal conditions. The team originally planned to enter the 1998 Petit Le Mans, but later declined. It was therefore decided that the two V12 LMs would be abandoned and that BMW, Williams, and Schnitzer would start anew in 1999 with the V12 LMR. The two V12 LM chassis were therefore sold off to privateers, with chassis 001/98 going to Thomas Bscher while chassis 002/98 was sold to Team Goh of Japan.

With BMW moving onto the all new V12 LMR, only the two privateer teams were left to campaign the rejected V12 LM. Thomas Bscher aligned with David Price Racing forming Price+Bscher Racing to concentrate on the new American Le Mans Series as well as the 24 Hours of Le Mans. In the ALMS, the car would take only two points scoring finishes, leaving it 13th in the points standings. While at Le Mans, the car would wind up taking 5th place overall, only 20 laps behind the V12 LMR which won. The car would make one final appearance at an FIA Sportscar Championship event at the Nürburgring, finishing 4th place overall.

Team Goh on the other hand decided to concentrate solely on Le Mans, with the car failing to finish due to gearbox problems. The car made one final appearance at the Fuji 1000km where it took 3rd place overall, 6 laps behind a winning Nissan.

For 2000, Team Goh announced a partnership with Japanese constructor Dome, in which the V12 LM would be heavily modified in order to correct its aerodynamic instabilities and cooling problems. The entire front end would be redesigned to relocate the cooling intakes, while vents were added to the side bodywork to assist in cooling. Unfortunately, the car was never campaigned and no other team chose to buy the chassis.

For Price+Bscher, David Price Racing reached an agreement to campaign for Panoz Motorsports of the United States, leaving Thomas Bscher to campaign his lone V12 LM. With losing his assistance from David Price Racing, Bscher was able to run the car at Le Mans, where the car failed to finish due to gearbox damage from an accident, and at the Nurburgring SRWC round in September. Following this, Bscher would retire the car, ending the racing career of the V12 LM.

After the Car and Driver test event, which Callaway drove a specially modified Callaway Twin Turbo Corvette (C4), known as the "Top Gun" project to the best of 231 mph (372 km/h), winning the test run. A production Callaway managed a best of, 187.95 mph (302.48 km/h).[7]

As Callaway wanted to take the record further into 250 mph (402 km/h) with the car being docile during traffic, he developed the SledgeHammer Corvette, to allow airflow into the engine, he commissioned Paul Deutschman of Deutschman Design to develop the Callaway Aerobody for stability.[8] The engine was extensively hand built with its turbo intercoolers being relocated from either side of the intake manifold to the front, behind the bumper. Overall engine power was rated at 898 horsepower (670 kW) @ 6200 rpm with 772 lb·ft (1,047 N·m) of torque @ 5250 rpm.[7] The car retained its road car amenities such as power windows and locks, Bose radio, electronic air conditioning and, power sport seats with all necessary race car modifications such as roll cage.[7]

Driven by John Lingenfelter, the car reached 254.76 mph (410.00 km/h) mph at the Transportation Research Center, Ohio and was driven back to Old Lyme.[7]

The Aerobody would become commercially available this would become the first of the partnerships with Deutschman, in which he also designed its later models such as Speedster, SuperNatural, C7, C12 and C16.[8]

After the Car and Driver test event, which Callaway drove a specially modified Callaway Twin Turbo Corvette (C4), known as the "Top Gun" project to the best of 231 mph (372 km/h), winning the test run. A production Callaway managed a best of, 187.95 mph (302.48 km/h).[7]

As Callaway wanted to take the record further into 250 mph (402 km/h) with the car being docile during traffic, he developed the SledgeHammer Corvette, to allow airflow into the engine, he commissioned Paul Deutschman of Deutschman Design to develop the Callaway Aerobody for stability.[8] The engine was extensively hand built with its turbo intercoolers being relocated from either side of the intake manifold to the front, behind the bumper. Overall engine power was rated at 898 horsepower (670 kW) @ 6200 rpm with 772 lb·ft (1,047 N·m) of torque @ 5250 rpm.[7] The car retained its road car amenities such as power windows and locks, Bose radio, electronic air conditioning and, power sport seats with all necessary race car modifications such as roll cage.[7]

Driven by John Lingenfelter, the car reached 254.76 mph (410.00 km/h) mph at the Transportation Research Center, Ohio and was driven back to Old Lyme.[7]

The Aerobody would become commercially available this would become the first of the partnerships with Deutschman, in which he also designed its later models such as Speedster, SuperNatural, C7, C12 and C16.[8]

This Ferrari prototype is not as well known and is one-of supercar built on Testarossa for the 1993 Geneva Auto Show. Called the Formula Zagato ‘93 (FZ93), it followed a small series of curious Zagato 348s and some classic Zagato-Ferraris which were all built in exclusive numbers.

The FZ93 was created by Ercole Spada who made a return to Zagato and designed this car. Ercole was responsible for the legendary Aston Martin DB4 Zagato and more recent cars like the iconic Alfa Romeo 155. His Testarossa made no concessions to the original and featured stylistic creases, huge air intakes and pleasing curves.

When first released at Geneva, the FZ93 featured an awkward two-tone paint scheme and huge black cavallinos which easily distracted the viewer from the actual lines of the car. Since its release, Zagato has repainted the entire body blood red and never looked back.

Paintwork aside, the FZ93 was initially received with mixed emotions and most viewers tended to prefer the original Pininfarina-designed Testarossa better. However, the FZ93 definitely had a influence on the Ferrari Enzo which was released almost 10 years later. Both cars share the same Formula-inspired nose and overall shape.

The Pininfarina designed F40 was debuted at the Frankfurt Auto Show in 1987 as a celebration of Ferrari's 40th year since its inception. Leonardo Fioravanti, the general manager of Pininfarina, declared the F40 would 'recover the spirit of some of the Ferrari cars of the past' and 'give our customers the possibility of driving objects that are very similar to the racing cars.'

The engine was a 2936cc V-8 engine with four valves per cylinder and twin IHI turbos. The engine was a modified version of the 228 GTO V-8. It was capable of generating 700+HP .

The suspension used was double-wishbone in the front and rear with a switchable height control because of the vehicles low ground clearance. The body was a tubular steel frame while the body being carbon-fibre, kevlar, aluminum, and honeycomb. Due to the desire to have a light vehicle, all windows were plastic except the windshield. The cockpit contained no door panels, carpet, or radio. There was no power-steering and to operate the door from the inside, a pull-cord was used. Lots of air scoops, wings, and vents adorned the vehicle. This was used to achieve maximum down force. The vents also aided in keeping the engine and brakes cool and the turbo's fed.

Due to the inconvenience of small, sliding windows, the cars were offered with air conditioning. Nearly every F40 sold had this option installed.

During its production run, The cost estiamte given during the prototype stages was set at $280,000. When the vehicle made it to the market, the price had increased to $400,000.

The Pininfarina designed F40 was debuted at the Frankfurt Auto Show in 1987 as a celebration of Ferrari's 40th year since its inception. Leonardo Fioravanti, the general manager of Pininfarina, declared the F40 would 'recover the spirit of some of the Ferrari cars of the past' and 'give our customers the possibility of driving objects that are very similar to the racing cars.'

The engine was a 2936cc V-8 engine with four valves per cylinder and twin IHI turbos. The engine was a modified version of the 228 GTO V-8. It was capable of generating 700+HP .

The suspension used was double-wishbone in the front and rear with a switchable height control because of the vehicles low ground clearance. The body was a tubular steel frame while the body being carbon-fibre, kevlar, aluminum, and honeycomb. Due to the desire to have a light vehicle, all windows were plastic except the windshield. The cockpit contained no door panels, carpet, or radio. There was no power-steering and to operate the door from the inside, a pull-cord was used. Lots of air scoops, wings, and vents adorned the vehicle. This was used to achieve maximum down force. The vents also aided in keeping the engine and brakes cool and the turbo's fed.

Due to the inconvenience of small, sliding windows, the cars were offered with air conditioning. Nearly every F40 sold had this option installed.

During its production run, a total of 1,315 cars were produced. The cost estiamte given during the prototype stages was set at $280,000. When the vehicle made it to the market, the price had increased to $400,000.

The Pininfarina designed F40 was debuted at the Frankfurt Auto Show in 1987 as a celebration of Ferrari's 40th year since its inception. Leonardo Fioravanti, the general manager of Pininfarina, declared the F40 would 'recover the spirit of some of the Ferrari cars of the past' and 'give our customers the possibility of driving objects that are very similar to the racing cars.'

The engine was a 2936cc V-8 engine with four valves per cylinder and twin IHI turbos. The engine was a modified version of the 228 GTO V-8. It was capable of generating 700+HP bhp.

The suspension used was double-wishbone in the front and rear with a switchable height control because of the vehicles low ground clearance. The body was a tubular steel frame while the body being carbon-fibre, kevlar, aluminum, and honeycomb. Due to the desire to have a light vehicle, all windows were plastic except the windshield. The cockpit contained no door panels, carpet, or radio. There was no power-steering and to operate the door from the inside, a pull-cord was used. Lots of air scoops, wings, and vents adorned the vehicle. This was used to achieve maximum down force. The vents also aided in keeping the engine and brakes cool and the turbo's fed.

Due to the inconvenience of small, sliding windows, the cars were offered with air conditioning. Nearly every F40 sold had this option installed.

During its production run, a total of 1,315 cars were produced. The cost estiamte given during the prototype stages was set at $280,000. When the vehicle made it to the market, the price had increased to $400,000.

The BMW V12 LMR was a Le Mans Prototype built for sports car racing from 1999 to 2000. The car was built through an alliance between BMW Motorsport and WilliamsF1, and was the successor to the failed BMW V12 LM of 1998. It is famous for being BMW's only overall victor of the 24 Hours of Le Mans.Immediately following the 1998 24 Hours of Le Mans in which both BMW V12 LMs had failed to finish due to mechanical difficulties and a slow pace caused by aerodynamic inefficiencies, BMW Motorsport made the decision to radically revamp their sportscar project and quickly replace the V12 LM with a new car for 1999, the V12 LMR.

The V12 LMR would retain only the basic structures of the V12 LM, while all of the car's bodywork was redone from scratch. The cooling ducts, a major problem on the V12 LM, were moved to the top of the car instead of from the bottom where it had suffered from ambient track heat. Among the more radical design features was the use of a small rollhoop located only behind the driver's seat, instead of a wide rollhoop which covered the entire cockpit. This was done through using a loophole in the ACO's Le Mans prototype regulations. This allowed for less drag as well as less obstruction for the air to the rear wing. A total of four new chassis were built by WilliamsF1 in the United Kingdom.

Internally, the V12 LMR retained the same BMW S70 6.1L V12 as the V12 LM. Also retained was Schnitzer Motorsport, who would run the team not only at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, but also in the new American Le Mans Series for 1999.

Debuting at the 12 Hours of Sebring, BMW Motorsport and Schnitzer Motorsport entered a two car team. The cars were immediately fast, taking the pole position in qualifying. During the race, both cars ran towards the front for the first six hours. Unfortunately, V12 LMR chassis #001 suffered a large accident, damaging the car to the point that it would never race again. However, the second V12 LMR was successful in taking the overall win.

From Sebring, the team went back to Europe in order to prepare for the 24 Hours of Le Mans. In early May, at the initial test session for Le Mans, three V12 LMRs appeared. In the tradition of the famous BMW Art Cars, one of the three cars featured a paint job created by artist Jenny Holzer. Unlike at Sebring, the V12 LMRs would be facing closed cockpit prototypes which were theoretically faster over a single lap yet not as fuel efficient. Even with this apparent set back, a V12 LMR was able to take the 4th fastest lap time over the practice session, behind two Toyota GT-Ones and a Panoz prototype.

For the race itself, only two cars appeared with the Art Car beind dropped from the line-up. In qualifying the two LMRs again showed their speed, taking 3rd and 6th places, again beaten only by the Toyota GT-Ones. During the race the V12 LMRs ran strong, outlasting a large number of closed cockpit competitors who suffered woes, including Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, Toyota, and Audi. In the second half of the race, BMW's main competitors were a pair of open-cockpit Audi R8Rs and the lone remaining Toyota GT-One. Unfortunately, in the closing hours of the race the #17 BMW V12 LMR driven by JJ Lehto crashed heavily in the Porsche Curves section of the track, as a result of a stuck throttle. This left the #15 BMW LMR in the lead, less than a lap ahead of the 2nd place Toyota. The Toyota was catching the BMW in the final hour until it suffered a tire blowout at high speed, allowing the Schnitzer BMW team to solidify their lead. The driving team of Joachim Winkelhock, Pierluigi Martini, and Yannick Dalmas were successful in bringing the V12 LMR home for the victory, a single lap ahead of the GT-One.

The BMW V12 LMR is estimated to put out about 580 hp, which in the 1999 edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans allowed the German prototype to hit 342 km/h (214 mph) on the Mulsanne Straight.

Following the success of BMW at Le Mans, the team decided to return to North America to finish the American Le Mans Series season. Making their return at Sears Point, the pair of BMWs won again. Over the final four races of the season, the BMWs would take two more victories, losing twice to the American Panoz prototypes. Even with four victories on the season, due to BMW's decision to return to Europe following Sebring and thus miss two ALMS races, BMW failed to take the team's championship, losing to Panoz by a mere two points.

For 2000, BMW's alliance with WilliamsF1 brought the team into Formula One, with BMW provided the engines for the WilliamsF1 team. It was therefore decided by BMW that the team would concentrate on the worldwide exposure of Formula One for the future, and that they would not return to Le Mans to attempt to follow-up on their victory. However, to not see the V12 LMRs go to waste, it was decided that BMW would run the full American Le Mans Series season before the cars were retired.

Starting the season at Sebring, the BMWs suddenly found themselves facing new competition, with Audi debuting their second generation R8 Le Mans prototype. The BMW's found themselves qualified 5th and 6th, behind both the Audis as well as both Panoz LMPs. During the race, the BMWs were able to outlast the Panozes, but struggled with the Audis. BMW was forced to settle for 3rd and 4th behind both Audis.

For the next two rounds, Audi attempted to perfect their R8 for Le Mans and therefore decided to race their older R8R instead. This allowed BMW to take victory at Charlotte and at the European event at Silverstone. Unfortunately in BMW's home race at the Nürburgring in Germany, the V12 LMR was defeated by a Panoz, although it did beat out an Audi R8.

Returning to America, with Audi having taken victory at Le Mans, the V12 LMR was now forced to finish out the rest of the season fighting the dominant R8. For the next four rounds, BMW could muster no better than second against the Audi, which won every round.

For Petit Le Mans, BMW decided to bring out chassis #004, the Art Car which had only ever ran at Le Mans testing in 1999. The car retained its paintjob from Jenny Holzer. Unfortunately the V12 LMRs suffered during the race, including one of the cars backflipping and flying into the side barriers, as did a Porsche 911 GT1 in the same place 2 years earlier, and the Art Car was the only V12 LMR able to finish, taking a distant 5th place.

In the final two North American rounds of the season, BMW still could not muster a win. It was decided by the team that they would not travel to Australia for the final round of the season, instead retiring the cars and concentrating on their new Formula One partnership. BMW would take second in the teams championship behind the dominant Audi. Unlike the V12 LMs, the V12 LMRs would not be sold to customers after their retirement.

The 320 became BMW's next weapon in the European racing scene after the exit of the highly successful 3.0 CSL. Both non-turbo and turbocharged versions of the highly successful Formula 2 'M12' engine powered these racecars. The BMW Junior Team who's up and coming drivers Eddie Cheever, Marc Surer and Manfred Winkelhock drove to eight victories made the non-turbo versions famous in the 1977 German Racing Championship.

The Turbo versions of these cars were raced in both Europe and the US. The European turbo cars had 1.5 liter engines while the US versions had 2.0 liter engines. The BMW owned versions of the 320 turbo you see here was campaigned by Team McLaren and driven by David Hobbs to 7 wins in the IMSA Camel GT series in 1977 and 1978. American Jim Busby also campaigned a sister car in the 1979 IMSA Camel GT series.

Significantly, the 320 turbo engine was the test bed for the BMW/Brabham BT52 that took Nelson Piquet to the 1983 Formula 1 World Championship.
