One unusual attribute is the horizontally opposed engine, which isn't common, but has been used in other cars as well, such as WV Beetle and Porsche. This type of engine has been used in all 4 cylinder and higher Subaru engines, and is still used today. Another unusual thing is the location of the spare tyre, which is in the engine compartment.
