Flywheel Alternator Starter Hybrid systems are sometimes known as a "Mild Hybrid". Instead of a conventional electric starter motor and alternator, this type of hybrid features a compact electric motor placed between the engine and transmission, known as a flywheel alternator/generator.

The electric motor provides fast, quiet starting power, and the ability to generate up to 14,000 watts of continuous electric power.

The electricity generated by the system has many uses. It can be stored in a 42-volt lead-acid battery and used later for starting the vehicle or other hybrid functions.

It also can be used to support on-board electric accessories or even provide power through 120-volt outlets inside or outside the vehicle.

As an example GM's Silverado/Sierra Hybrid trucks utilize this system and provide outlets in the pickup bed. These outlets can power everything from power tools at a construction site to home appliances during power outages.
