The Great Wikicars Migration

Dear user, I am writing this note to inform you that over the course of the next few days Wikicars will be migrating to a new home on Shoutwiki. Since we have been left for dead by parent site Internet Brands, Wikicars will be merging with Shoutwiki Autopedia. Rest assured we will do everything in our power to preserve all existing articles in our move including talk pages and edit history so your articles of interest will remain intact. All we humbly ask for is your patience and understanding. Thank you.

If you have further questions, ask me on my talk page or User:Silver Knight.

Welcome to Wikicars!

Hi there, MQuan, and welcome to Wikicars! I'm a regular moderator and contributor here, and when I notice on the recent changes log that a new editor has registered, I like to send them a welcome message - that's how I ended up on your talk page.

If you've never edited here before, there are a few useful links that you might want to look at, designed to help newcomers learn the ropes:

Here are a few templates on Wikicars that I find particularly helpful when I start a new page:

Here are a few features of Wikicars that I find particularly helpful:

  • If you leave a message on a talk page, you can sign it with four tildes (~), which will automatically produce your name and a date stamp when you save the page.
  • The "Show preview" button allows you to look at what your post will look like before you save it - that way, you can proofread what you've written and not have to back and correct spelling mistakes, failed links, etc.
  • You can create a watchlist for yourself that will keep a record of any changes made to a page that interests you.

There are plenty of other features and facets of Wikicars, many of which I probably haven't even discovered myself, so have fun looking around and finding them.

If you need help, ask me on my talk page.

Again, welcome! - Nidhi 15:33, 20 September 2006 (UTC)

Any suggestions then?

Hi. Thanks for the explanation about removing my discussion page for auto enthusiasts. Honestly, though, I'm surprised you completely eradicated the content, rather than just move it somewhere appropriate (like to my user subpage, or something). Wikis are primarily about community, not content, so it seems odd that there wouldn't be some room someplace on this site for that kind of discussion. Is there a way you can suggest to allow me to tap into the people working with the information rather than the information itself? --Kmakice 13:43, 5 June 2007 (UTC)

Spyker Template Image Voting

Just so you know, we are currently holding elections for which image will grace the Spyker Template in Garage Talk. Since you are a member, your vote would be most appreciated.

Revamping our Pages

Added four new ideas and removed one in the Pricing section. In case any of you would like to change your votes, now's the time.

Bureaucrat Position

I would like to put forward my nomination for Bureaucrat Status. Besides being the most frequent contributor on this website, I am working on projects such as establishing an Anti-Spam bureau, and further renovation of our pages that I feel would require these Bureaucratic powers.

Spam Police

...Speaking of which, I would also like to officially announce the formation of the Spam Police program. Basically, a spam police is obligated to perform RC patrols everytime, he/she logs in. The point is a more organized way of dealing with these pests. There are two units to join into, Admin-Sysops, being that they hold more power, join the "Officer" Ranks, while members obtain "Deputy" status and will only be obligated to report such breach. I am planning to change this situation, though, if and when I recieve "Bureaucrat" status by granting members the power to block IP addresses and seize and protect "spam hotspots". For further information and to sign up, go to Wikicars' Anti-Spam HQ.

NEW INFOBOX SYSTEM

I have recently discovered how to format our infobox in similar fashion to Wikipedia's Master Template System whereby a we will no longer have to replicate the infobox again and again for each individual page. What will happen instead is that from this point on there will be a set of codes similar to the ones below that will act as a "surrogate" and where you will be filling out the basic information. It will replicate the "master template" on thepage but with the individual information you've written filled out on it. What this allows for is that if and when we finally decide to change the design/update the infobox we will no longer have to manually alter each infobox from page to page.

{{Infobox |
|Image = place image here in 300 pixels
|Marque = place marque here - not manufacturer
|aka = Type aka here, not up there
|Production = produced from when to when+total units made (optional)</nowiki>
|Class = denote market class
|Body Style = how many doors+how many seats+what type of body
|Length = length - type here
|Width = Width - type here
|Height = Height - type here
|Wheelbase = wheelbase - type here
|Weight = Weight - you get the point
|Transmission = transmission + drive
|Engine = engine
|Power = N/A hp @ N/A rpm<br>N/A lb-ft of [[torque]] @ N/A rpm
|Similar = similar (competition)
|Designer = Designer (lead designer if it was a team effort)
}}

Updating Wikicars

MQuan, please help me petition the boffins at Internet Brands to upgrade the mediawiki software Wikicars is running on? We are still running on MediaWiki 1.6.5 when 1.12.0 is out already and includes lots of new toys including a feature I saw in Wikipedia where page editors need to type a confirmation code provided on the page before the edits will be accepted. That will help eliminate spambots and allow us to concentrate on other more important chores and be more productive for the site. Most of the time I now spend on Wikicars is me cleaning up the mess the vandals and spammers have done rather than updating the pages and improving its look and feel.
