The Triumph Toledo was produced as a less expensive version of the Triumph 1300. The 1300 was replaced by the Toledo and the 1500, with the former being a cheaper, more basic version and the latter a more upscale version. The 1300 hadn't lived up to the hopes of Triumph to outsell the aging Herald, so the Toledo was made cheaper and it reverted to rear-wheel drive from the 1300's front-wheel drive. The intent to replicate the success of the herald is also evident in the fact that the Toledo was initially only offered as a two-door sedan.

Styles and Major Options

The Toledo came in both 2-door and 4-door sedan bodystyles, with only the 2-door available in the home market for the first year. It could be had with either the 1300 cc or 1500 cc engines, with the latter available with a single or twin carburettor. The 1500 TC designated the twin craburettor 4-door sedan, but there was no 2-door TC. Triumph did develop a 2-door twin carburettor model under the 'TS' designation, but it never managed to reach production.
