The Triumph 1500 was a successor to the Triumph 1300, which in turn had been intended as a replcaement for the Triumph Herald. The FWD 1300 was intended to compete with the BMC 1100 range of vehicles, but it never achieved the success of the BMC 1100. In 1970, the 1300 was replaced by the 1500 which carried the same FWD chasis until 1973 when it switched to RWD. Ironically, the Herald had outlived the 1300, but production was halted in 1971 to make way for the Triumph 1500 and Triumph Toledo. The Toledo, 1500, and the early-70's Dolomite were all essentially the same car, but with different engines and appointments. By the mid-70's, Triumph revised the confusing name system by naming the whole small-car lineup "Dolomite" with numbers, such as 1300 or 1500, to indicate what the engine and trim level was.
