Design quirks and oddities

According to the 2003 RACV Vehicle Security Rating, the SR5 Hilux scored zero points meaning a high risk of theft.

Top Gear

The Toyota Hilux earned its reputation of toughness as Top Gear proved. In Series 3, Episodes 5 and 6, they bought an old Hilux for £100 with an odometer reading of 190,000 miles (308,000 kilometres). Jeremy took the Hilux to Bristol to put it through abuse. He drove down the stairway, scraped a building and drove into a tree. He then drove east to the English Channel where it was scaped again and reversed on a boat ramp where it was tied up with rope. The tides washed the Hilux out until the ropes snapped. It was then recovered after 6 hours and when fixed, it starts and drives.

After that, Jeremy took the Hilux to the Top Gear test track. The car is dropped, driven through a shed supposeably called the 'Top Gear production office', a caravan was dropped, a demolition ball was rammed and then, Jeremy lit the interior and tray with fire.

But then James May made an attempt to destroy the Hilux by putting it on an apartment to be demolished. After that, the Hilux was barely recognisable. Amazingly after a repair job, the car starts and drives.

The crew only used simple tools such as a screwdriver, an adjustable wrench and some motor oil. The windscreen was replaced with a plastic screen as the original one was swept by the tides at the English Channel. The Hilux rests as a decoration for the Top Gear studio.

In the first amphibious car challenge (Series 8, Episode 3) Jeremy Clakrson converted a Toyota Hilux into a boat, the vehicle has a raceboat engine (though Jeremy wanted two engines but was denied because of cost and weight), a roof hatch to get in and out (because of the doors in which are fixed and sealed), a hull, the suspension is locked and Jeremy even painted 'Toybota' on the back of the tray. However in the challenge, Jeremy turned too fast and it tipped over just by the finishing line.
