TDI is a name given to turbo charged diesel engines. The TDI engines tend to be much more efficent than standard diesel. Many TDI's get between 45 and 55 mpg.

TDI's are popular for their performance as well. There is a good website with forums and information about TDI's at http://www.tdiclub.com/
