Regenerative braking allows a vehicle to recapture part of the energy that would otherwise be 'lost' to heat when braking, and make use of that power by storing it in the vehicle's on-board battery system. The vehicle's electric motor becomes a generator when coasting or braking, keeping the battery charged up and ready for the next start and accelerate situation.
All hybrid vehicles on the market today make use of regenerative braking.
