Porsche has joined other automakers and announced plans to build a Hybrid version of its Cayenne SUV. Production of the Cayenne Hybrid will combine a gasoline engine with electric traction motor(s). Rumors that Porsche have discussed partnering with Volkswagen to build the powertrain are unconfirmed. This would not be surprising though as the Cayenne has a sibling in the Volkswagen Touareg. The two companies have a long and friendly history with the Porsche family (many of who are also board members of Porsche) currently moving to increase their stake of Volkswagen ownership. The former head of Volkswagen Group, Dr. Piëch owns a significant share of Porsche, roughly 13% and happens to be grandson of Ferdinand Porsche.

The launch date is expected before the end of 2009.
