Porsche has joined other automakers and announced plans to build a Hybrid version of its Cayenne SUV. Production of the Cayenne Hybrid will combine a gasoline engine with electric traction motor(s). Rumors that Porsche have discussed partnering with Volkswagen to build the powertrain are unconfirmed. This would not be surprising though as the Cayenne has a sibling in the Volkswagen Touareg. The two companies have a long and friendly history with Porsche family and board members currently moving to increase their stake of Volkswagen ownership. The former head of Volkswagen Group, Dr. Piëch owns a significant share of Porsche, roughly 13% and happens to be grandson of Ferdinand Porsche.

The launch date is expected before the end of 2009.
