Primera MK1 P10 (1990-1996)

The first incarnation of the Nissan Primera was launched in July 1990 as successor to the Bluebird. It was built at the Sunderland plant in England, though there was a Japanese version of the car which had been sold as an Infiniti since 1989. The Primera was initially available with 1.6 and 2.0 petrol engines as well as a 2.0 diesel. Bodystyles were five-door hatchback, four-door saloon and five-door estate.

Unlike previous Nissan efforts, the Primera was geared towards the European market in terms of design and driver appeal, and at the time of its launch was easily the best handling large family car on sale in Europe. It sold well in the UK, though it couldn't match the six-figure volume sales consistently achieved by established favourite brands Ford and Vauxhall.

Primera MK2 P11 (1996-2001)

Production of the second generation Primera commenced at Sunderland over the summer of 1996, although Japanese production had started almost a year earlier. There was initially just a five-door hatchback and four-door saloon available, with the five-door estate joining the line-up in September 1997. The 1.6 and 2.0 petrol engines and the 2.0 diesel were carried over from the original Primera.

A facelift during the summer of 1999 saw the Primera receive a restyled exterior and the added option of a 1.8 petrol engine, although this version of the Primera was mostly only sold in Europe. This was called the P11-144.

Primera MK3 P12 (2001-present)

The radically-styled third generation Primera was launched in late 2001, carrying over the hatchback, saloon and estate bodystyles of its predecessor. This Primera was popular in some European markets, but sales in the UK were not strong and in October 2006 it was announced that the Primera would no longer be sold in the UK. Despite this, production at the Sunderland plant continued for export markets and will continue to do so until the launch of its successor in 2008. It has yet to be confirmed whether the new car will be badged as a Primera, whether it will be sold in the UK, or even where it will be built.

Worldwide

The Primera was sold under the Infiniti brand in the US and re-named the G20. In Japan it was known as the Camino. Everywhere else it retained it's title as the Primera.
