The latest model Magnas get a 5 year 120,000 kilometre warranty with 5-10 years drivetrain warranty included.

Magnas have been reliable so far. But for some cars that have travelled over 150,000 kilometres, mechanical parts may need to be replaced and could be costly.

According to CAR Survey.org, the average reliability rating for the latest Mitsubishi Magna is 8.33 out of 10.

Paint fade issue

Third generation-Rev 2 (TL, TW) (2003–2005)

The TL Magna received a major facelift. The overall appearance of the facelift saw a new triangular front. Around the car, the minor re-designs are cleaner than its predecessor. All power windows are standard and so are the side-thorax airbags. The car also came with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution as standard in the base model ES (replacing the Executive).

When the Magna was phased out and replaced by the new 380, the wagon version has been phased out.

Third generation-Rev 1 (TJ) (2000–2003)

The TJ Magna is a refresh of the TH. The most notable changes are the nose with the swooping bonnet line into the bumper and the circular shapes in the taillights.

Third generation (TE, TF, TH) (1996–2003)

The TE Magna is 3 mm shorter, 10 mm wider and 31 mm lower than the TS Magna. The new design offered a more cleaner streamlined body with a fastback style, pillarless doors and triangular taillights.

The TE-TH Magna's consists of two V6 engines (3.0L and 3.5L). The 4 cylinder is dropped from the range from the TH onwards, this can be distiguged by a "V6" badge, models without the V6 badge were using a 4G64 2.4L 4 cylinder and the Executive gained the 3.0L V6. The 3.5L V6 is optional in the Executive model but standard in all other models. Apart from the 4 speed Automatic and the 5 speed Manual gearbox choices, Mitsubishi Australia provided a 5 speed Tiptronic style Automatic. The first in the Australian motor industry and not just that, the TJ also saw the introduction of the new all-wheel-drive system available in the TJ AWD and TJ AWD Sports.

First Generation/Origins (TM, TN, TP)(1985–YYYY)

This is the first Magna model to come from the Tonsley Park Plant. The TM which replaced the Sigma. It was based on the Japanese front wheel drive Galant Sigma adapted to Australian conditions with $60 million AUD in development. The car was the huge success in sales since the cars had left the factory. Its wider body provided good competition with other locally built cars the similar age such as the Toyota Camry, the VK Commodore and the XF Falcon. Its 2.6L Astron engine provides good dose of power and torque to keep up the competition with reasonable fuel economy for a large car. The TM Magna is smooth, quiet, stylish, well-made and provides ample handling for a front wheel drive. The range runs from GLX, SE and the top-of-the-range Elite with the starting price of $12,852 AUD. 67,290 vehicles have been sold.

Variants

Magna AWD

Released in 2003, the new all-wheel-drive system is the first in the Australian motoring industry. It offered superior grip than any other cars built in Australia (cars such as FWD Camrys, Avalons and Magnas and RWD Falcons and Commodores at that time) without bulk of any offroading vehicle. The AWD system uses a combination of parts from the Diamante and the Lancer Evolution XI which ensures a neat package for a transversely mounted engine and to save costs but it is powered by a larger 3.5L V6 engine for a broader spread of torque and more power to handle the extra weight. This system is available in Magna, Magna Sports and Verada models.

Design quirks and oddities

Not all Magnas are LPG compatible so anyone wanting their Magna to run on LPG should be careful. Owners should check their engines if they're capable. Otherwise, durability would be shortened.

Most Magnas (Post 1996) can run happily of 91 RON unleaded. They can run better on 95 RON prenium unleaded and are suitable to run on E10 fuel.

The TJ Magna is the second most secure large car according to the 2003 RACV Vehicle Security Rating with the score of 69.5 points out of 120.
