Ther Mercury Tracer was Mercury's smallest car from 1988-1999. It was based on the Mazda 323, Platform. The Mercury Tracer replaced the Mercury Lynx. The Mercury Tracer was introduced in 1987 as a 1988 year model. The 5 Door Hatchbacks were built in Hermosillo, Mexico and the 3 Door Hatchbacks was built in Hiroshima, Japan. In 1991 Mercury totally redisigned the Tracer dropping the hatchbacks and buliding it exclusively in Hermosillo, Mexico and making it a 4 Door Sedan and Station Wagon only. And received a more powerful 1.8L 127HP 114LBS Torque I4 Engine. Then in 1997 Mercury Totally Redisigned the Tracer for the last time the redesign included a all new interior, exrerior and a new 2.0L 110HP I4 Engine. The models trim levels included the GS, LS, and LS Trio Edition. The LS and LS Trio Editons included leather interior, key-less entry, alloy wheels, and power door locks ans power windows and power mirrors features not common in other compact sedans. The last Mercury Tracer rolled of the line December 1998, but the Ford Escort stayed in production until 2000 available only to fleets.
