The new Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe was premiered at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2009, following leakage of various promotional photos on the internet. The premiere saw the resurrection of a model nomenclature spanning over 40 years in total, save for a decade being known as the CLK, but Mercedes-Benz has now brought an end to the CLK name and has decided to return to its prime coupe market, where this model belongs. It is mainly based on the new W212 E-Class sedan, though it features very few technical underpinnings from the W204 C-Class, such as the Agility Control technology, which is modified accordingly for use in an E-Class vehicle.

Recent Changes

This latest E-coupe is for the first time in its history distinctly different from its sedan stablemate, though being based on the sedan, the design shows various distinctions here and there, a good example is the headlamps, which exhibit a more exclusive nature, as are the rear light clusters with there more sporty design. Then there is the interior, which is completely restyled to match the language of the coupe.

  • The 2010 Detroit Auto Show play host to the launch of the 2010 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Cabriolet. Unlike most cabriolets in the class, the E Cabrio features a 0.9 inch softtop in place of a retractable metal folding roof. The droptop is also set to feature Mercedes' new anti-draft technology AIRCAP® which is being allied to its proprietary AIRSCARF®. Under the bonnet, the topless E-Class gets similar engine options as its Coupe brethren. [1]

Styles and Major Options

The E-coupe is offered in three different design and equipment lines; these are ELEGANCE, AVANTGARDE and SPORT. Though in some markets such as Great Britain, the ELEGANCE is named as SE.

ELEGANCE /SE

The ELEGANCE /SE continues to be the most luxurious model from the range, outlining the exclusive character of this model to best extent, with features such as numerous chrome finishes, wheels and elegant interior combinations.

AVANTGARDE

The AVANTGARDE is the intermediate model between sport and luxury, though its emphasis is more on the sport side, it still offers some luxurious features such as; wood interior trim, chrome elements and many equipment options. This model is no longer available in some markets such as GB, where a similar scenario happened with the W204 C-class and the W212 E-class, as the AVANTGARDE was somewhat been replaced by the SPORT version.

SPORT

This version puts its emphasis purely on the sport attributes of the model. It features many distinguishing features such as; full AMG body styling including 18 inch AMG wheels, sports based interior with Aluminum trim, sports suspension, and a special adaptive accelerator system which maximises responsivenes whilst accelerating, along with many other features to provide an unmistakable Dynamic appeal.

Many optional features are available for the E-coupe, a selection of the ultra advanced systems from the sedan are included, such as; ATTENTION ASSIST, NIGHT VISION + and ADAPTIVE HIGH BEAM ASSIST among many other convinience features are offered.

Unique Attributes

The model in iteslf is a truly unique car, but one aspect that really sets it apart is the fact this is the world's most aerodynamically shaped car; with a cd (coefficient of drag) value of only 0.24. The engineers and designers have gone to great lengths to achieve this figure, among other things, a big reason for this is the measures taken through the BlueEFFICIENCY package.

Generations

The new E-Class Coupe is the 4th generation of this model series. The E-Class Coupe has traditionally had a special status within the Mercedes family, and the latest incarnation certainly lives up to that glamorous heritage. It's predecessors were all pure marvels of gorgeous design and advanced technology, combined with the trademark quality and solidity which the three pointed star is well renown for. This is one of the reasons they are enjoying an exclusive classic status today.

C124 (1986 - 1996)

See also Mercedes-Benz W124 for more details.

This was the last E-coupe, when it gave way to the CLK in 1997. Mercedes would not return to this segment until in 2009, with the introduction of the latest E-coupe. One glance at the C124, was enough to reassure that Mercedes designers opted for a more mature image compared to previous generation. The Coupe was based on the W124 E-class sedan, because it was an E-class it therefore, needless to say, boasted the highest levels of engineering achievement and supreme quality. The coupe was now given a more distinctive identity, with many unique design cues when compared to the sedan. At launch the 300 CE was the top model with a modern 3.0 litre six-cylinder engine producing 190 hp. The whole range was facelifted in 1993, it was a major facelift, which therefore included many changes to the original model, including new headlamps and radiator grill, adopted from the sedan, the top model now was the E320. Also worthy of mention is the fact that the range was no longer named CE, it was now called E-class, just like the facelifted sedan of 1993. the last C124 E-coupe was produced in 1996.

C123 (1976 - 1986)

See also Mercedes-Benz W123 for more details.

The E-coupe now in its second generation, was proving a success. The designers decided to give the second mid-sized coupe a particularly distinctive character to the W123 Sedan, whilst it was still provided as the basis of the coupe. This meant the most advanced engineering of that era with unheard levels of quality and durability. The Coupe was given lightly distinguishing features, such as a lower front, less imposing more elegant rear light clusters with chrome strip among other features gave the whole car a more special character for discerning tastes. It was such an individualistic model, that occasionally it had to be ordered months before customer delvery. A special highlight of the C123, was the addition of the 300 CD, which featured a five-cylinder diesel engine from the sedan, and later fitted with a turbocharger for the ultimate diesel of the era, though this model was only available in the USA. The C123 has proved to be the most revered among enthusiasts from the line of E-class coupes.

C114 (1968 - 1976)

See also Mercedes-Benz W114 for more details.

Its predecessors include the W114 'Stroke 8' C/CE coupe (1968-1976), this was the model that gave rise to this truly unique concept of an E-class coupe, which even until today no other maker has had a category of a pure mid-size coupe, on its unveiling in late 1968 it caused a stir amongst the general public and motoring journalists alike, in a word 'simply beautiful', is how people described this dream car. It was based on the E-class of the time - the W114/115 sedans, therefore it featured revolutionary engineering advances. A special highlight of this generation was the 2.5 litre fuel injected engine used in the 250 CE, it was the first Mercedes-Benz with BOSCH electronic fuel injection, this modern injection process enabled the 250 CE with similar performance characteristics to that of the larger carburettored 280C. The top model was the 280 CE, which produced an astounding 185 hp from it 2.8 litre six-cylinder fuel injected engine.
