The Lotus Evora is a sports car to be produced in Britain from November 2008. It will be the world's only mid engined 2+2 on sale. Originally known as Project Eagle, the Evora was officially launched on the 22nd July 2008 at the British International Motor Show, however images were released prior to this date.

Featuring a modified 3.5-litre V6 engine from Toyota capable of 276 bhp, the Evora is also the first all-new Lotus since the launch of the Elise in 1995. The car is aimed at attracting new customers to the marque, and as such the car is taller and has wider door apertures than the smaller Exige and Elise variants.

The Evora also utilises the VVA (Versatile Vehicle Architecture) chassis which can be used as a platform for any car up to 1900 kg. This system was first previewed on the Lotus APX Concept.

The car will be hand built at the Hethel factory in England, capping production at approximately 2000 units a year, and will be sold throughout the world. Production starts in November 2008, and the first deliveries will occur in Spring 2009.

Recent Changes

• The 2010 Paris Motor Show hosted the world debut of two new Evora variants. The first is the hotted-up Evora S. The S slaps a supercharger on top of the Camry-sourced 3.5 litre V6 and now produces 350 hp. Other features include a standard sport package (with a sport button that adjusts throttle response and engages the exhaust's bypass valve), and a rear diffuser with a wide-mouth center-exhaust outlet. There's also a heads-up display and cross-drilled rotors. The second Evora to come out in Paris is the Evora IPS (Intelligent Precision Shift), which is a regular Evora but switches the Manual for an Automatic.[1]

• Lotus recently announced that in 2011, they will unveil the Evora SC, a supercharged version of the standard car which will increase horsepower output from 276 to 350. That should be enough to increase top speed from 160 to 175 mph. In between now until then Lotus will also introduce an Automatic transmission (the first time Lotus has done so in recent memory) as well as a roadster version. Some sources claim that it will be a retractable hardtop. [2]

To address the worldwide appeal of the car, it has been reported that a convertible version is highly plausible, and the car will be available in either 2+2 or 2-seater form.

Engine and Transmission

The engine itself is a 2GR-FE 3.5-litre V6 DOHC with intelligent variable valve timing. Maximum horsepower (276 bhp) is available at 6400 rpm, and maximum torque (252 lb ft) is available at 4700 rpm respectively.

The Evora utilises a 6-speed manual gearbox which is also Toyota-sourced. Lotus will also offer a close-ratio version of this gearbox in the future.

Performance

Little information regarding performance was released by Lotus upon launch other than torque and horsepower figures. In it's press release, Lotus claimed a top speed of 160 mph and a 0-60 mph time of under 5 seconds.

Hybrid Models

• Lotus has announced that the 2010 Geneva Motor Show will host the unveiling of the Evora 414E Hybrid. The car will be powered by a pair of rear-mounted electric motors and a 1.2 litre Petrol Inline-3. The system, similar to the Chevrolet Volt and the Fisker Karma utilizes the twin electric powerplants as its source of motivation, with the 47 hp internal combustion engine only coming to life to recharge the 17 kilowatt-hour lithium polymer batteries once they run low on juice. Output is rated at 408 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque available instantly at no revs at all. All in all, the car will have a 35 mile all-electric range and a 300 mile range running the gas engine.
