Make/Model

The Lincoln Aviator was a mid-size luxury sport utility vehicle sold between 2003 and 2005. It was based on the third generation Ford Explorer SUV and was the only vehicle assembled at Ford's Hazelwood Assembly plant in Hazelwood, Missouri. It sold poorly and the last vehicle was produced August 12, 2005.

The lone engine option in the 2003-2005 Aviator was a 4.6-liter Dual Overhead Cam V8 sourced from the Ford Mustang Cobra. This engine produced 302-hp (225.2 kW) at 5750 RPM and 300 lb-ft (406.7 Nm) of torque at 3250 RPM. This engine required the use of premium unleaded gasoline.

Safety

The 2003-2005 Aviator was not tested by the NHTSA, although its mechanical twin, the Ford Explorer was. The following scores are for the 2003-2005 Ford Explorer and were sourced from safercar.gov

Note: The Lincoln Aviator is equipped with standard side airbags for both front passengers, therefore, the side impact results of the Ford Explorer are incorrect. It is expected that the Aviator would score higher in the side impact test because of its side airbags.

Safety Concern: During the side impact test, the driver door became unlatched. Following the test, the door was open six inches at the latch.

Future

Originally, the Aviator was supposed to be on hiatus for the 2006 model year, reappear based on the Ford CD3 platform. However, Ford scrapped the Aviator name, and will be replaced by the mid/compact-based Lincoln MKX crossover SUV, which was unveiled at the 2006 North American International Auto Show. The MKX will be available for sale in the fall of 2006 as a 2007 model.
