So far, the VY Commodore has been reliable with it's refined drivetrain giving no trouble. It's worth checking for problems with automatic transmissions as they might clunk or shudder on take off if any of them are neglected. Shifting from Park to Drive quickly and quietly will mean the transmission is in good working order. There's also a degree of vibration when the accelerator is pushed hard and owners shouldn't be put off. The problem lies with 2 propshafts that can vibrate but not damaging to the engine.

According to Car Survey.org, the average reliability rating is 8.04 points out of 10.

Safety

The VY Commodore scored 26.74 points out of 37 (4 stars) in the 2003 crash test conducted by ANCAP. The passenger compartment held its shape reasonably well and there is a marginal risk of serious chest injuries for both driver and front passenger and protection from chest injury in a side-impact crash is weak for the driver.
