The Daihatsu Terios is a mini SUV, first released in 1997 by the Japanese car manufacturer Daihatsu. The engine was a modified Daihatsu Charade 1.3 litre engine or 660cc keicar engine, with constant four wheel drive or two wheel drive. It comes in 5-speed manual transmission or 4-speed automatic transmission. The width of the first generation Terios is lesser than 1500mm to fulfill the keicar regulation. The second generation of Terios is co-developed by Daihatsu and Toyota.

Performance

Accelaration is poor due to the little horse power offered by the 1500cc's, hardly enough to power an all time 4X4 SUV, with only 4 gears [for automatic transmission] and no tiptronic control it hardly competes with anything else on the road, that and that fact that top speed is 150 KM/H [automatic] or 160 KM/H [Manual] the Terios is definately no runner. Handling is ok for an SUV and so is braking, still not the best braking power perhaps because of the light weight [1170 KG]. The car offroads great, being a light-weight 4x4 it is not easy to get stuck in the sands no matter how soft they can be. Also a very important missing feature is cruise control.

Unique Attributes

Interior

Interior design is not the best, compared to compact SUVs in the same category such as the Suzuki Vitara, the Terios is much less attractive and offers overall less quality. However it is fair to say controls are accessible and well distributed. One major design flaw is the inability to shut the ventilation ducts in the centre, though vents on the left and right can be open or shut as well as redirected. Trip computer is handy but not very accurate when it comes to feul consumption calculation or the showing altitude. One advantage is interior light distribution, very efficient and accessible for both front and rear seats, there is a small light bulb for the storage area which turns on when the back door is open, alas it has no switch and can not be turned on or off on demand. The back seat can be folded to give more space to the storage area which is great, and fairly easy to do.
