The clutchless "autostick" option offered on the Volkswagen Type 1 (Beetle) was a semi-automatic transmission (no clutch) that allowed drivers to shift from "first" to "second" by letting up on the accelerator and pressing down on the shifter knob. It gave the feeling of driving a standard transmission without having to worry about using a clutch pedal.
