Sommaire

Recent Changes

  • Toyota quietly launched the three-door Auris hatchback on July 3, 2007 for the Euro-market. It will be powered by its 5-door sibling's 1.4L VVT-I engine mated to a five-speed manual, to be followed by a 1.6L unit and several diesel engines ranging from 1.4L to 2.2L. Intended to be marketed as the sportier model, it will eventually spawn performance options including an AWD configuration and, rumour has it, a possible V6 engine variant.

Styles and Major Options

The Auris is available only as a hatchback, with either 3 or 5 doors. The Auris shares much with the Corolla saloon.

the Auris undergoing EuroNCAP front impact testing

One of the main selling points of the Auris is safety. it scored a very rare 100% frontal impact score in the Euro NCAP tests, where it also scored a 5 star adult occupent rating. Auris models come with 9 airbags as standard, as well as Toyota's MICS (Minimum Intrusion Cabin System). ABS EBD and Brake Assist are standard across the range, although stability and traction control are not.

Unique Attributes

Interior

This section should include information on the interior's design, build quality, ergonomics, space (head and legroom, front and rear), features, stowage compartments and overall comfortability and livability. Add pictures wherever applicable and keep information in a third-person point of view.

The interior of the Auris features a bridged centre console, with the gear lever high up on the dashboard, and the handbrake at an unusual vertical position. the cabin features ample storage with twin gloveboxes, fold-out cupholders at either end of the dashboard, an under-seat compartment, 2 sunglasses holders and depending on specification, a further cupholder or two in the centre console. The Auris does not feature an in-built ashtray, instead a cup type ashtray fits any of the cabin's cupholders.

Cabin quality on the Auris is dubious. Cheap, easily marked plastics abound. large plastic parts such as the upper glovebox lid rattle over road imperfections due to complete lack of sufficent padding. Items such as cup holders are easily broken, and the general feel of the interior is that it was done in a hurry and on a very tight budget.

Criticisms

Many of the criticisms of the Auris stem from bad design and an apparent lack of quality. The car has been the subject of a number of recalls by Toyota in a relatively short period of time. Most other gripes relate to the cabin area which is proving less than durable. Keen drivers bemoan the lack of independent suspension on all but the range topping T180 model.
