The Saturn Aura is a mid-size sedan produced by General Motors' Saturn brand. It debuted as a concept car at the North American International Auto Show in January 2005. The production model of the Aura was shown at the 2006 New York Auto Show in April, with production commencing in the summer of 2006 for the 2007 model year. The Aura replaces the Saturn L-series, which had seen lackluster sales and was canceled with the 2005 model year.

The concept used a 250 hp (186 kW) 3.6 L V6 and a new 6T70 6-speed automatic transmission. That powertrain, along with a 224 hp (167 kW) 3.5 L V6 and hybrid 170 hp (127 kW) 2.4 L I4 are offered in the production models as the XR, XE, and Green Line versions, respectively. The Aura is built on the GM Epsilon platform, and is built at the Kansas City, Kansas, Fairfax Assembly plant with the Chevrolet Malibu.

Hybrid Models

The Aura Green Line hybrid is expected for the 2008 model year. It will feature a 2.2 liter inline-4, 4-speed Automatic transmission and a Belt Alternator Starter that acts as an electric motor assist. This drivetrain is similar to that of the Saturn VUE Green Line.

First Generation/Origins

The new-for-2007 Aura effectively replaces the L-Series that was discontinued in 2004. The Aura is based on the same extended Epsilon platform that underpins the Chevrolet Malibu and Pontiac G6. This platform debuted on the 2003 Saab 9-3 and for this reason, the Aura has a European feel to its ride quality and structure. The Aura concept was shown at the North American International Auto Show in January 2005. The production model is very similar in appearance to the concept, and the 3.6 liter DOHC engine of the concept is carried over into the uplevel XR model. Joining the XR is the XE model with a 3.5 liter V6 and and Green Line with a 2.4 liter inline-4. Styling of the Aura is similar to the Opel Vectra, the car's sister model. Large wheels and chrome trim are upscale features lacking in the previous L-Series. Competitive pricing of the Aura places its XE V6 model on par with Honda, Toyota, and Nissan 4-cylinder models.
