Welcome to Wikicars!

Hi there, Pepperpop11, and welcome to Wikicars! I'm a regular moderator and contributor here, and when I notice on the recent changes log that a new editor has registered, I like to send them a welcome message - that's how I ended up on your talk page.

There are a few useful links that you might want to look at, designed to help newcomers to Wikicars learn the ropes:

Here are a few templates on Wikicars that I find particularly helpful when I start a new page:

Here are a few features of Wikicars that I find particularly helpful:

  • If you leave a message on a talk page, you can sign it with four tildes (~), which will automatically produce your name and a date stamp when you save the page.
  • The "Show preview" button allows you to look at what your post will look like before you save it - that way, you can proofread what you've written and not have to back and correct spelling mistakes, failed links, etc.
  • You can create a watchlist for yourself that will keep a record of any changes made to a page that interests you.

There are plenty of other features and facets of Wikicars, many of which I probably haven't even discovered myself, so have fun looking around and finding them.

If you need help, ask me on my talk page.

Again, welcome and thanks for adding to our community!

There are also various templates for different types of vehicles, such as {{subst:Concept Model}} for concept cars; {{subst:Racing Model}} for general racing vehicles and {{subst:Formula One Car}} for Formula One vehicles. Note that these codes are all case sensitive. I would advice you to first check out a number of our featured pages to get a feel and idea of the overall product we aim for. This is necessary for the sake of professionalism. If you have any further questions, simply contact me or any other one of the admins.

Spyker Template Image Voting

Just so you know, we are currently holding elections for which image will grace the Spyker Template in Garage Talk. Since you are a member, your vote would be most appreciated.

Great Start

Hi Pepperpop11. Just wanted to drop by and say you're off to a great start! Your enthusiasm hasn't gone unnoticed, so keep up the good work. We're always appreciative of prolific users, and it seems you have some good Wiki knowledge, so please feel free to engage in our discussions. Take care! - Pastrami on Ry 20:11, 30 July 2007 (UTC)

Bureaucrat Position

I would like to put forward my nomination for Bureaucrat Status. Besides being the most frequent contributor on this website, I am working on projects such as establishing an Anti-Spam bureau, and further renovation of our pages that I feel would require these Bureaucratic powers.

Spam Police

...Speaking of which, I would also like to officially announce the formation of the Spam Police program. Basically, a spam police is obligated to perform RC patrols everytime, he/she logs in. The point is a more organized way of dealing with these pests. There are two units to join into, Admin-Sysops, being that they hold more power, join the "Officer" Ranks, while members obtain "Deputy" status and will only be obligated to report such breach. I am planning to change this situation, though, if and when I recieve "Bureaucrat" status by granting members the power to block IP addresses and seize and protect "spam hotspots". For further information and to sign up, go to Wikicars' Anti-Spam HQ.

Honda Accord

Pepper, I recently uploaded a VERY large number of factory-sanctioned promo pics (fair use, don't worry) of the new 8th-gen 2008 Accord. Unfortunately, I'm not really very knowledgeable on the vehicle (or very good at writing articles, ashamedly) and seeing as you seem to specialize on all things Honda, I was wondering if you would kindly do some rewriting to update the page. There are a couple of links in the "External Links" section that lead to Honda's press release if you want to cultivate information for the article. Thanks in advance.

Spam Officer

Thanks for joining. I am giving you your badge to signify your membership. I am also going to lobby to give you blocking rights so you can function properly as an RC patroller. Red marquis 00:34, 3 September 2007 (UTC)

Spam Control

Actually you don't delete them, you sequester them. In my experience, there are several different types of Spammers and I would advise different ways of dealing with them. We have a serial spammer whom I have been duking it out with for the past couple of months who's MO is creating pages from scratch from which he will put all of his crap. Unfortunately, blocking him and deleting his page doesn't seem to be enough since he has access to a large number of IP addresses (probably from operating in an Internet cafe or he has some kind of device/program that allows him to create various IP addresses) so even if you delete his page/s he will simply use another IP address and reactivate said page/s. To battle him, I have been sequestering his pages and redirecting it to Wikicars' Anti-Spam HQ, placing it in the watch list then protecting the page to sysop-level. This way we send this offender the message that his actions are not tolerated here and that he is not welcome. Moreover, that his actions will be futile. Another spammer that have been seeing some action lately is the vandal-type spammer. This is the spammer who likes to vandalize an existing page with his crap. The past couple of days, I've been seeing a spammer who's been targeting Review Pages specifically. If you see a page or review page in your RC patrols with with what looks like gibberish enclosed in a parenthesis like these (owqhtmpt) or (easzyrmo) or (kimydjrs), that is him. Unfortunately, there is really only one way to deal with this type of spam offender and that is to block him and revert his "work". If this persists within a specific page then we move to protect said page from unregistered users. Right now, Wikicars' seem to be turning to shit (check out today's Recent Changes) and the powers that be have been apathetic to all my requests and appeals to assume emergency powers. I get the feeling they've completely neglected this website - probably don't even check on it anymore. Quite sad.

NEW INFOBOX SYSTEM

I have recently discovered how to format our infobox in similar fashion to Wikipedia's Master Template System whereby a we will no longer have to replicate the infobox again and again for each individual page. What will happen instead is that from this point on there will be a set of codes similar to the ones below that will act as a "surrogate" and where you will be filling out the basic information. It will replicate the "master template" on thepage but with the individual information you've written filled out on it. What this allows for is that if and when we finally decide to change the design/update the infobox we will no longer have to manually alter each infobox from page to page.

{{Infobox |
|Image = place image here in 300 pixels
|Marque = place marque here - not manufacturer
|aka = Type aka here, not up there
|Production = produced from when to when+total units made (optional)</nowiki>
|Class = denote market class
|Body Style = how many doors+how many seats+what type of body
|Length = length - type here
|Width = Width - type here
|Height = Height - type here
|Wheelbase = wheelbase - type here
|Weight = Weight - you get the point
|Transmission = transmission + drive
|Engine = engine
|Power = N/A hp @ N/A rpm<br>N/A lb-ft of [[torque]] @ N/A rpm
|Similar = similar (competition)
|Designer = Designer (lead designer if it was a team effort)
}}

Sequestering

I already explained it in the spam control discussion. I added a few bits to detail how I'd like to see this campaign run. And you don't "sequester people", you sequester pages. You block people. Hope that helps. Red marquis 01:55, 8 September 2007 (UTC)

Main Page

Ok. I will unlock it to member status for the next 24 hours. Red marquis 00:57, 11 September 2007 (UTC)

I am happy to inform you...

That you have the honor of being the sites newest sysop. Have fun with your new powers. Enzo Worshipper (Talk to me + Contribs) 20:02, 25 September 2007 (UTC)

Jeep Liberty

cool. however, next time, categorize images as you upload them. 0-172 is cracking down.

Red marquis 01:02, 2 October 2007 (UTC)

Categorizing images

Simply type [[Category:(the name of the marque) images]] on the portion of the upload file page where it says "summary". If it's a promotional image (i.e. Factory-produced, which would make it completely fair use [a legality thing]), also type the following {{promotional}}.

Red marquis 11:30, 2 October 2007 (UTC)

Forgot to mention, don't include the parenthesis when categorizing.

Updating Wikicars

Pepperpop11, please help me petition the boffins at Internet Brands to upgrade the mediawiki software Wikicars is running on? We are still running on MediaWiki 1.6.5 when 1.12.0 is out already and includes lots of new toys including a feature I saw in Wikipedia where page editors need to type a confirmation code provided on the page before the edits will be accepted. That will help eliminate spambots and allow us to concentrate on other more important chores and be more productive for the site. Most of the time I now spend on Wikicars is me cleaning up the mess the vandals and spammers have done rather than updating the pages and improving its look and feel.
