In 2000, Toyota decided to revive its MR2 nameplate for the Toyota MR2 Spyder, a mid-engine, rear-wheel drive, 2-seater spyder. This car is clearly a strong competitor to the Mazda MX-5 Miata, and many agree that it has the upper hand in performance and handling. This car was part of Project Genesis, Toyota's plot to attract youth, ultimatly ending in producing the Scion label of automomiles. The MR2 Spyder takes some of its styling from the Porsche Boxster, which is by coincidence also a MR-layout 2-seater. Toyota halted production of the MR2 Spyder in 2005 in America.
