The Mazda Z engine family is an evolution of the B family. It started with 2.0 L and 2.3 L variants found in the Mazda3, Mazda6 and Ford Ranger. For 2004, Ford dropped its own Zeta Zetec engines in favor of Mazda's, naming the resulting engine the Duratec 20 and Duratec 23.
The 1.5 L (1489 cc, 92 hp) Z5-DE was used in the 1995-1998 Mazda Protegé, Mazda Lantis (Astina) and in Mazda Familia Neo (1994-1997). Bore and stroke were 75.3 mm and 83.6 mm. The Z5 was a totally new design and it became the basis for Mazda Z series of engines. The block is the same with the Mazda B series, particularly the B6 DOHC 2nd generation, except for the interal parts. It shares the same 2 piece oilpan, upper aluminum and lower stamped steel. JDM versions produce 97HP and some 110HP
The ZM engine is also known as the Z6, it is the evolution of the Z5 with round intake and exhaust ports.
The 1.5L (1498 cc, 130 hp) ZL-VE and 1.6 L (1598 cc, 105 hp) ZM-DE are closely related engines with an equal bore (78mm) and share some major parts. The ZL has a stroke of 78.4 mm whilst the ZM has 83.6 mm. The ZL makes more power, in its high end ZL-VE form, then its larger displacement version due to variable valve timing on the intake cam (s-vt).

The versatile MZR is Mazda's latest straight-4 engine. Development was assisted by Ford, who also sell the engine as the Duratec 23. The MZR family features a special long intake manifold for added torque, S-VT continuous variable valve timing, and a stainless steel 4:1 exhaust header.
The DISI turbocharged MZR was on the Ward's 10 Best Engines list for 2006 and 2007.
