The Chevrolet Camaro was introduced in the 1967 model year in response to the Ford Mustang. Some GM executives thought that the Corvair was the car to compete with the Mustang, but when the Chevrolet had to spot Ford over 1,000,000 Mustang sales before the end of the 1966 model year, the powers-that-be at GM declared that something clearly needed to be done. While the public clearly embraced the straight-forward Mustang, many weren't quite sure what to make of the Corvair, however, with its rather dowdy styling, dashboard-mounted shift levers, swing axles and rear-engine design... many thought the Corvair competed more on a level with the Volkswagen Beetle than a Mustang.
So, in November, 1966, the Camaro was born. Just like the Mustang was based on the humble Ford Falcon, the Camaro borrowed heavily from the Chevy II, but being based on the upcoming new 1968 Chevy II (Nova), it had the advantage of being stronger and more robust than the 1967 Nova. Henry Haga was in charge of developing the car's overall design, while George Angersbach developed the car's interior.
The Camaro, along with its Pontiac Firebird twin, were known as F-bodies and spanned a total of 36 model years, yet covered only 4 generations before being laid to rest after the 2002 model year. Sales reached an all time high in 1979, with over 282,000 models sold. The F bodies flirted with death more than once during their tenure, but GM would always manage to keep the faith on them... but they would finally lose the faith after the 2002 model year. There were a number of supposed contributing factors to the F-body's demise - declining sales, lack of safety features such as side-impact airbags, contractual disputes with the Canadian government over the St. Therese production plant... all (or none) of those issues were mitigating factors, only the powers-that-be at GM truly know for sure.
But for those anxiously awaiting the Camaro's triumphant return, GM has rewarded patience with an all-new semi-retro styled model in April 2009 as an early 2010 model. Dodge resurrected its mighty Challenger in 2008, and Ford has an all-new restyled Mustang available (also as an early 2010 model), so for the first time since the early 1970s, a true 3-way ponycar shootout between GM, Ford and Chrysler is happening once again.

Current Generation: (2009–present)
Perhaps because of the popularity of the 2005 Ford Mustang, GM produced what is officially being called a "design exercise." or concept of what GM would imagine the Camaro to be. With undoubtedly a LSX engine pumping out 400hp, and 400 lb/ft of torque with GM's active Fuel Management, which shuts down cylinders from 8 to 4 to conserve fuel when full engine power is not needed. GM hopes to get 30 mpg highway out of the engine.

Camaros in Racing
Of the first generation of the Camaro, probably the most famous race car is Roger Penske's number 6, blue and yellow road racer. The car competed in the Trans Am series in SCCA. It was driven by Mark Donohue. To comply with the series the engine was limited to just 302 cubic inches, or 5 liters.
