Generations
Current Generation (2004–present)
The current generation of the Carol was introduced in 2004 and is sold through Mazda, Mazda Autozam, and Mazda Anfini dealerships. The new Carol was made because Suzuki created a new Alto on which the Carol is based. The vehicle, as with many of the previous Carols, is marketed mainly towards young women.
Eighth Generation (2001–2003)
The eighth Carol recieved the new "Mazda family" look that was centered around a five-point grille with a Mazda logo in the middle. This was done to make it look more like a Mazda, as opposed to the unaltered previous model. This move, along with the re-branding of the Carol as a Mazda from an Autozam in the previous generation, was part of the process of eliminating the different sales channels (Eunos, Autozam, Anfini) and putting more focus on Mazda itself. Emissions and safety were the main focus of the update, but the Carol also recieved larger, multi-reflector headlamps and more unique bumpers.
The improved Carol also featured a keyless entry system, driver's seat heater on four-wheel drive models, and new five-speed manuals on manual models. A new all-aluminum DOHC VVT I-3 engine was sold with some of the five-door models.
Seventh Generation (1999–2000)
The seventh generation of the Mazda Carol appeared in October 1998 as a 1999 model year vehicle and was based on the Suzuki Alto with virtually no actual changes aside from Mazda badges. The vehicle was sold from Mazda Autozam dealerships in Japan, although it was not called an Autozam as with previous Carols. The vehicle was equipped with such safety features as impact-absorbing body panels and four-wheel ABS. The Carol was available in either three-door or five-door forms and could be had with either front-wheel drive or 4WD and was powered by a 3-cylinder 657 cc SOHC or 658 cc DOHC 12-valve engine.
